SUMMARY:The Picture Book Book: Seymour Chwast & Steven Heller in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join Poster House for a conversation with legendary designer and illustrator Seymour Chwast and design historian Steven Heller in celebration of Chwast’s latest publication\, The Picture Book Book: The Art of Seymour Chwast. This discussion will explore Chwast’s decades-long creative career and the role children’s books play in championing experimental illustration\, typography\, and graphic design. \nThe conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A and a book signing in Café des Affiches. Copies of The Picture Book Book will be available for purchase in the Poster House Shop. \nSeymour Chwast is a designer\, illustrator\, and author whose work has shaped contemporary graphic design for more than seven decades. As a founding partner of Push Pin Studios\, he helped redefine postwar American visual culture through an eclectic approach that drew on vernacular imagery\, historical references\, and expressive typography. Chwast has written and illustrated more than 40 children’s books and created an extensive body of posters\, publications\, and illustrations that are represented in the collections of major museums worldwide. In 2023\, he received the Design Visionary Award from the Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum. His latest publication\, The Picture Book Book: The Art of Seymour Chwast\, traces his enduring engagement with children’s literature as a vehicle for experimentation\, storytelling\, and graphic invention. \nSteven Heller is the co-founder and co-chair emeritus of MFA Design at the School of Visual Arts and editor-at-large at printmag.com\, where he writes The Daily Heller. He is a former contributing columnist to the New York Times Book Review\, where he was also the senior art director. Heller is the author and/or editor of more than 200 books on graphic design\, illustration\, and political art\, including Iron Fists: Branding the 20th Century Totalitarian State; Merz to Emigre and Beyond: Avant Garde Magazine Design of the Twentieth Century; and Growing Up Underground: A Memoir of Counterculture New York. \nAccessibility Note: Masks are available free of charge at the museum. SUMMARY:Make Your Own Pop-up Book with Kelli Anderson
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, graphic designer and paper engineer Kelli Anderson will demystify how pop-up books come together\, offering an informative lecture as well as hands-on building activities.\n\nAnderson will first show her design process for 3-D elements: how to build “blanks\,” how to envision 2-D design on 3-D surfaces\, how to set up a print file for a dimensional project\, and how to most effectively work with a printer. She will also discuss the science behind 3-D interactive print elements\, including how they impact reading experiences. \nEach participant will receive a laser-cut kit of paper pieces\, which they will then assemble into a “sliceform” pop-up taken directly from Anderson’s new book\, Alphabet in Motion.  \nNo prior experience is necessary. Come learn a new skill and bring home your very own interactive pop-up book! \nKelli Anderson uses design magic to connect people with the depth and possibility of the world. She created This Book is a Camera (MoMA)\, which transforms into a working camera\, and This Book is a Planetarium (Chronicle)\, which has sold more than 100\,000 copies. Her book Alphabet in Motion about typography and technology was published to wide acclaim in the fall of 2025.  Her clients include NPR\, The New Yorker\, the Guggenheim\, MoMA\, Apple\, and The New York Times. She has been nominated for the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Award twice. She teaches at NYU and Cooper Union.  \nAccessibility Note: Masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs. SUMMARY:Members-Only Last Look: Reading Under Fire
DESCRIPTION:Poster House members are invited to a private “Last Look” tour of the exhibition Reading Under Fire: Arming Minds & Hearts During Wartime led by curator Molly Manning.  \nDuring World Wars I and II\, nearly every combatant nation recognized that reading material was necessary to the wellbeing and morale of its soldiers—and books soared in popularity. Between lulls in action or when waiting for orders far from the front lines\, the troops read to forget their surroundings and fears\, taking a mental vacation from their hardships. \nThis exhibition includes book-related posters from the United States\, Great Britain\, Canada\, and Germany printed during both world wars. All of these nations relied on public book donations and fundraising to supply soldiers with books\, and many posters were designed to encourage such civilian contributions. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs.
