SUMMARY:First Friday: Screenprinting with Indigo
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on workshop in connection with Blazing A Trail: Dorothy Waugh’s National Parks Posters that introduces the basics of indigo dyeing and screenprinting with clay resists. Each visitor will print their own Dorothy Waugh-inspired bandana. Our teaching artist will guide everyone through the full process from printing to final color setting. \nThis workshop is suitable for visitors aged 15 and older. \nTeaching Artist: Madeleine Conover (@madeleineconover) is a Chinese American adoptee and multidisciplinary artist whose work explores Asian American diaspora\, personal history\, and community building. She holds an MFA in Printmaking from the Tyler School of Art and Architecture\, and her work has been exhibited in Philadelphia\, New York City\, Western Massachusetts\, and the Bay Area. Based in Philadelphia\, Madeleine teaches printmaking and ceramics and runs a small risograph press called Mad Dog Studio. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. SUMMARY:First Friday: Community Garden Block Printing with Jessica Lou
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive workshop\, participants will learn the basics of block printing and carve their own printing blocks. The session begins with an introduction to block printing\, covering its history\, home printing techniques\, creative inspiration\, and safe carving practices. \nUsing nature-themed prompts inspired by the museum’s exhibition Blazing a Trail: Dorothy Waugh’s National Parks Posters\, participants will carve their blocks and then share and print each other’s designs\, creating unique collaborative works. This approach is intended to build confidence and community through shared creativity. \nSince carving tools are used in this workshop\, it is not suitable for participants under the age of 12.  \nTeaching Artist: Jessica Lou (@lookygoodss) is an independent artist who celebrates her Asian-American heritage by reimagining Chinese culture in fresh and playful ways across multiple art forms. Her work seeks to capture the joy and nostalgia that shine through the complexities of being a third culture individual. Jessica creates and sells art prints\, posters\, stickers\, magnets\, and more through her website and at in-person pop-ups. Her primary mediums include digital illustration\, graphic design\, risograph printing\, and block printing.
