DESCRIPTION:Join Center for Book Arts for this in-depth linoleum printing workshop inspired by the printing techniques in Ethel Reed: I Am My Own Property. In this course lead by artist and printmaker Elizabeth Castaldo\, students will learn the basics of relief carving and printing. Using speedy carve blocks—an easy to carve material—we will practice carving techniques using linocut tools. Each student will create their own block with their own original image. We will then learn to print the blocks by hand using water based inks on paper. The instructor will cover methods for transferring an image to the block\, various carving techniques\, inking the block\, and printing. Students will leave the workshop with a block they can continue to print from at home.  Members receive 20% off by entering their email at checkout!

SUMMARY:Constructivist Letterforms in Early Soviet Movie Posters
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is excited to welcome Misha Beletsky for an evening exploring the Cyrillic hand-lettering in The Utopian Avant-Garde: Soviet Film Posters of the 1920s. Moderated by Chief Curator Angelina Lippert\, this talk will examine how designers incorporated a variety of lettering styles into their dynamic movie posters\, using them as both a means of communication and as graphic elements within the compositions. Questions about Russian lettering\, typography\, and poster history are strongly encouraged! \nMisha Beletsky is the Art Director at Abbeville Press and the President of the Typophiles. He curated Russia Rising\, an exhibition of protest posters at SVA (with Steven Heller)\, and I Make Posters Every Day\, an exhibition of work by Peter Bankov at Type Directors Club. SUMMARY:The History of Black Women in Graphic Design
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to welcome Dr. Cheryl D. Miller and Tasheka Arceneaux-Sutton for an evening celebrating the contributions of Black women to the field of graphic design. Accomplished designers in their own right\, Miller & Arceneaux-Sutton will join forces to uplift the legacy of Black women designers\, paying special attention to those that have shaped poster history. They’ll shed new light on these deeply important graphic artists\, highlighting their rightful place in design history while honoring the continued legacy of Black women in the field. This talk is for everyone from those new to design history to the seasoned professional—all attendees will learn something new\, and questions are strongly encouraged! \nCheryl Miller is a national leader of Minority Rights\, Gender\, Race Diversity\, Equality\, Equity\, and Inclusion advocacy in Graphic Design. She is founder of Cheryl D. Miller Design\, Inc.\, N.Y.C.\, a Social Impact Design firm; she is a designer\, author\, trade writer for PRINT Magazine\, CA Communication Arts Magazine\, a revisionist\, decolonizing historian and theologian. The Cheryl D. Miller Collection at Stanford University is her legacy professional firm’s archive\, including her memoir research and manuscripts. The collection features D&I initiative\, Corporate Communications developed for Fortune 500 corporations\, and Corporate Communications for National African American organizations developed post Civil Rights Era\, 1974–1994. She is Distinguished Senior Lecturer\, University of Texas\, Austin Design. She is a member of The Board of Trustees\, Vermont College of Fine Arts and The President’s Global Advisory Board\, Maryland Institute College of Art. \nShe is the AIGA Medalist 2021\, “Expanding Access;” The Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Awardee\, “Design Visionary” and the IBM Honorary Design Scholar\, “Eminent Luminary” 2021. \nTasheka Arceneaux-Sutton is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at NC State University and faculty in the low-residency MFA program in Graphic Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Arceneaux is the principal at Blacvoice Design\, a studio that specializes in branding\, electronic media\, identity\, illustration\, print\, and publication design\, for educational institutions\, non-profit organizations\, and small businesses. The use of typography has a strong presence in her work—she is a type enthusiast who enjoys hand-lettering\, typesetting\, and deconstructing type through a combination of analog and digital processes. Arceneaux has exhibited work nationally and abroad\, and in 2013\, her work was featured in Idea: International Graphic Art and Typography magazine. \nArceneaux’s research focuses on discovering Black people omitted from the graphic design history canon. She’s also interested in the visual representation of Black people in the media and popular culture\, primarily through the lens of stereotypes. She is the co-curriculum designer for Black Design in America: African Americans and the African Diaspora in Graphic Design\, from the 19th through the 21st Century—Black Design in America is a series of pre-recorded BIPOC centered history courses. Her essay “A Black Renaissance Woman: Louise E. Jefferson” is a part of a collection of essays in the book Baseline Shift: Untold Stories of Women in Graphic Design History. \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. DESCRIPTION:Poster House is excited to partner with Dr. Jonathan Square for a close look at posters in the museum’s collection that address Black history and culture. Dr. Square will explore how Black representation in poster history has evolved over time\, drawing from a curated selection of posters from the museum’s permanent collection . Whether created by Black designers\, featuring Black figures\, targeting Black consumers\, or advocating for Black issues\, there’s no shortage of overlap between Black history and poster history. \nJonathan Michael Square is the Assistant Professor of Black Visual Culture at Parsons School of Design. He is also currently a fellow in the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has taught at the University of Pennsylvania\, Fashion Institute of Technology\, and\, most recently\, at Harvard University. His writing has appeared in Fashionista\, Fashion Studies Journal\, Refinery29\, Vestoj\, Small Axe\, Hyperallergic\, British Art Studies\, and International Journal of Fashion Studies. DESCRIPTION:How are museums morally and ethically obligated to ensure their spaces are accessible to all? And are they delivering on that obligation and including disabled individuals in such conversations? Join Poster House and artist\, educator\, and disability rights activist Oaklee Thiele in discussing the issue of museum accessibility and various measures cultural institutions can take to ensure all individuals are guaranteed the right to intellectually and physically engage with their texts and publications. \nThe workshop will include a breakout room session where attendees will be given a scenario that requires accessibility intervention. Attendees will then devise a solution to the problem using the tools and information provided in the talk\, and have the opportunity to give a three-minute presentation on their ideas to the larger group.  \nPoster House is a new museum that opened its doors in 2019. Although we do not yet have an exhaustive range of accessibility options\, this program is part of our effort toward more equitable spaces. DESCRIPTION:Every month\, Poster House offers virtual Vibrant Verbal Description Tours specifically for community members who are blind or have low vision. \nIn order to reach a wide\, art-loving audience around the world\, we offer our description tours online through Zoom. These tours are led by our Chief Curator\, allowing you intimate access to the items in our current shows and permanent collection. \nThis tour will focus on the posters of Milton Glaser featured in the exhibition The Push Pin Legacy. \nPlease email access@posterhouse.org or call 917.722.2439 x413 by January 18 to sign up for this event. Questions strongly encouraged! \nAdam Howard is a Senior Associate Producer at the Full Frontal with Samantha Bee show. He is also a co-creator and Executive Producer of the Full Release with Samantha Bee podcast. Prior to his career in late night comedy\, he spent several years as a journalist\, writing about pop culture and politics for The Daily Beast\, Playboy\, NBC News\, and The Nation. He is a graduate of Columbia University’s School of Journalism and studied film history and screenwriting at Bard College. \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off.
