SUMMARY:ASL Night: Monoprint Mixed Media Workshop with Youmee Lee
DESCRIPTION:Learn to create monoprints with various media using brayers\, brushes\, stencils\, and paint sticks! We will make monoprints by painting designs on plexiglass before printing them on paper and applying collage and image transfers. This workshop\, centered on social justice\, is intended to be playful and fun\, encouraging participants to express themselves boldly! \nYoumee Lee is a deaf animator and certified Teacher of the Deaf based in New York City. Youmee served as the artist-in-residence at the New York School for the Deaf\, teaching art to deaf and hard-of-hearing students. After completing her teaching residency\, she returned to school to pursue an MA in Deaf Education at Teachers College at Columbia University. Youmee has also advocated for the visibility of deaf representation in literature\, writing and illustrated children’s books about an Asian American family that feature deaf characters\, published by Gallaudet University Press. Youmee strives to empower deaf children and adults to express themselves and develop their understanding of and appreciation for storytelling. Youmee Lee earned an MFA in Film and Animation from Rochester Institute of Technology and an MA in Deaf Education from Teachers College\, Columbia University. She is currently pursuing her visual arts teacher certificate through Pratt Institute’s Art and Design Education program. \nPlease note: this workshop will be led in American Sign Language (ASL). While this event is primarily offered for members of the signing community\, everyone is welcome\, space permitting. ASL Interpretation will be available for this workshop. \nThis event is part of an evening celebrating members and artists of the signing community. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on workshop in connection with Blazing A Trail: Dorothy Waugh’s National Parks Posters that introduces the basics of indigo dyeing and screenprinting with clay resists. Each visitor will print their own Dorothy Waugh-inspired bandana. Our teaching artist will guide everyone through the full process from printing to final color setting. \nThis workshop is suitable for visitors aged 15 and older. \nTeaching Artist: Madeleine Conover (@madeleineconover) is a Chinese American adoptee and multidisciplinary artist whose work explores Asian American diaspora\, personal history\, and community building. She holds an MFA in Printmaking from the Tyler School of Art and Architecture\, and her work has been exhibited in Philadelphia\, New York City\, Western Massachusetts\, and the Bay Area. SUMMARY:First Friday: Community Garden Block Printing with Jessica Lou
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive workshop\, participants will learn the basics of block printing and carve their own printing blocks. The session begins with an introduction to block printing\, covering its history\, home printing techniques\, creative inspiration\, and safe carving practices. \nUsing nature-themed prompts inspired by the museum’s exhibition Blazing a Trail: Dorothy Waugh’s National Parks Posters\, participants will carve their blocks and then share and print each other’s designs\, creating unique collaborative works. This approach is intended to build confidence and community through shared creativity. \nSince carving tools are used in this workshop\, it is not suitable for participants under the age of 12.  \nTeaching Artist: Jessica Lou (@lookygoodss) is an independent artist who celebrates her Asian-American heritage by reimagining Chinese culture in fresh and playful ways across multiple art forms. Her work seeks to capture the joy and nostalgia that shine through the complexities of being a third culture individual. Jessica creates and sells art prints\, posters\, stickers\, magnets\, and more through her website and at in-person pop-ups. Her primary mediums include digital illustration\, graphic design\, risograph printing\, and block printing.

SUMMARY:Colonial Dreams to Fascist Empire
DESCRIPTION:Colonial Dreams to Fascist Empire: Italian Aggression\, Ethiopian Resistance in the 19th & 20th Centuries \nDespite the significance and international impact of the Second Italo-Ethiopian War of 1935–37 in the lead-up to World War II\, its history is not widely known. In this talk\, Dr. David B. Spielman will examine the historical context behind the Second Italian War of Aggression\, and Italy’s subsequent occupation of Ethiopia from 1935 to 1941. In particular\, he will address the history of Italian colonialism in the Horn of Africa and Ethiopian anti-colonial and anti-facist resistance.  \nDr. David B. Spielman is an Assistant Professor of premodern/early modern history of the Horn of Africa at NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study. His focus is on the premodern/early modern Christian Kingdoms of Ethiopia\, but his research interests also include Ethiopian/Eritrean Ge’ez literature\, Ethiopian/Eritrean religion and theology\, Horn of Africa manuscript cultures\, law\, African history\, global history and more. He earned his PhD in History from UCLA and is currently working on his first book which examines the history of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the law of the Kingdom of Ethiopia in the 15th–19th centuries.  \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum.
