SUMMARY:Psychedelic Posters: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:The psychedelic poster movement coincided with the rise of American counterculture\, the use of mind-expanding substances like marijuana and LSD\, and the explosion of the rock-n-roll scene in the late 1960s. \nFrom about 1966 to 1970\, this movement flourished in San Francisco\, the center of the hippie universe. Like many of the Belle Époque posters from the early 1900s\, psychedelic posters were first and foremost advertising a product–the weekly rock dance concerts at venues like the Fillmore Auditorium and the Avalon Ballroom. \nBut instead of delivering clear messages like traditional posters\, psychedelic posters often had to be deciphered by the viewer. The main principle of the psychedelic poster was not to deliver messages clearly and directly\, but rather to tease\, engage\, and entertain for as long as possible. Its stylistic trademarks were obscured and disguised lettering\, vivid color\, vibrant energy\, flowing organic patterns\, and a mix of cultural images from different places and time periods. The style was also tribal in the sense that if you could decipher and appreciate these posters then you were truly a member of the hippie subculture – you were hip\, man. \nJoin psychedelic poster expert and Bahr Gallery owner Ted Bahr for a trip back to San Francisco in the late 1960s\, and learn about the context\, the artists\, and the great works that were created during this furious burst of creativity – some of which you will see firsthand as part of Poster House’s Permanent Timeline. \nThis event is in person at Poster House. Poster House operates in compliance with the Key to NYC mandate. All museum visitors older than 12 must show proof that they have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccination records and IDs will be checked upon entry. SUMMARY:Person Place Thing with Jim McMullan
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to partner with Randy Cohen for a live recording of his popular public radio series Person Place Thing. Tonight\, he will be joined by the prolific designer and illustrator Jim McMullan\, whose work appears extensively in the exhibition The Push Pin Legacy. McMullan has created images for countless magazine stories\, books for adults and children\, record covers\, U.S. stamps\, murals\, and animated films. His best known work\, however\, is the series of over 80 posters he has done for Lincoln Center Theater\, a selection of which is now on permanent display in the lobby of the Mitzi Newhouse Theater.  \nPerson Place Thing is an interview show based on the idea that people are particularly engaging when they speak\, not directly about themselves\, but about something they care about. Guests talk about one person\, one place\, and one thing with particular meaning to them. The result: surprising stories from great talkers and thinkers.  \nRandy Cohen’s first professional work was writing humor pieces\, essays\, and stories for newspapers and magazines. His first television work was writing for “Late Night With David Letterman” for which he won three Emmy awards. His fourth Emmy was for his work on Michael Moore’s “TV Nation.” He is currently the creator and host of Person Place Thing\, a public radio program. \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. A recording of the event will be made available for all registered attendees. Questions about access? Please email Salvador Muñoz\, Public Programs Manager\, at salvador@posterhouse.org.

SUMMARY:At the Grindhouse with Adam Howard and Josiah Howard
DESCRIPTION:Blaxploitation is often harshly critiqued as a cinematic genre for its negative representations of Blackness by relying on stereotypes\, the hypersexualization of women\, and ridiculous caricatures. In the 1970s\, however\, Blaxploitation saved many Hollywood studios from the brink of bankruptcy while breaking barriers for Black representation in mainstream media. Join curator Adam Howard in conversation with author Josiah Howard (no relation) as the pair discuss Blaxploitation with the nuance and complexity the topic deserves. Together they’ll explore both the good and the bad of the genre and discuss its lasting impact on contemporary film culture. \nAdam Howard is a Senior Associate Producer at the Full Frontal with Samantha Bee show. He is also a co-creator and Executive Producer of the Full Release with Samantha Bee podcast. Prior to his career in late night comedy\, he spent several years as a journalist\, writing about pop culture and politics for The Daily Beast\, Playboy\, NBC News\, and The Nation. He is a graduate of Columbia University’s School of Journalism and studied film history and screenwriting at Bard College. In his spare time\, he illustrates his own alternative movie posters and resides in Brooklyn\, N.Y. with his wife Elizabeth Rosado and their dog Cookie. \nJosiah Howard is a senior contributor at The Deuce and Furious Cinema and is the author of Blaxploitation Cinema: the Essential Reference Guide. His writing credits include articles for the American Library of Congress\, the New York Times and Reader’s Digest. \nThis event is in person at Poster House\, and a recording will be made available on our vimeo page for our virtual audience. Poster House operates in compliance with the Key to NYC mandate. All museum visitors older than 12 must show proof that they have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. SUMMARY:Intern Instagram Takeover: Erica
DESCRIPTION:Poster House’s second season of summer internships is almost finished.  \nFour amazing people joined the museum’s ten-week\, paid summer internship program this July through August. They were afforded remote access to all parts of running a cultural organization\, from collections management to public outreach\, educational development to corporate membership. Over the next few weeks\, they will be sharing their final projects\, writing for the museum Blog\, and creating unique social media content. \nThis Monday\, Collections Intern Erica Evans will be taking over the museum’s Instagram Stories for a full day\, exploring posters featuring the Alps. She is writing her master’s thesis on the intersection of German Expressionism and Alpine culture. During her free time\, she enjoys watching countless episodes of the Food Network show Chopped despite being a lackluster cook.

SUMMARY:We the News at Poster House
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to welcome We The News\, a traveling newsstand that documents\, publishes\, and distributes the stories of Black im/migrants and first-generation Black Americans. Stop by the museum to meet the artist behind this incredible project and to explore zines that share these important but overlooked narratives. While you’re here\, be sure to check out Freak Power an exhibition that tells the story of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson’s bid to become sheriff of Aspen in 1970. SUMMARY:Art for an Equitable Cannabis Industry
DESCRIPTION:While drug reform was a central issue of Hunter S. Thomspon’s 1969 Freak Power campaign\, it still remains at the forefront of civic discourse. How has society’s perception of marijuana evolved over the past 40 years? What drugs should be decriminalized?  \nPoster House is thrilled to partner with Lanese Martin\, founder of The Hood Incubator\, and artist & designer Bee Harris for a conversation on their recent collaboration as part of Amplifier Art’s Cannabis Justice Now campaign. This conversation will center on their creative poster intervention for a racially just approach to marijuana legalization as well as the intersection of art and politics on this crucial issue. Questions strongly encouraged!  \nLanese Martin is an award-winning community organizer with a background in electoral campaigns\, policy and advocacy on issues impacting Black people and the areas they work\, live & play – Lanese supports projects that address systemic inequality. As co-Founder of The Hood Incubator\, she guides the national grassroots organization’s mission to end the drug war and reverse its impacts on Black communities. Lanese also Chairs the City of Oakland’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission. Under Lanese’s leadership the city of Oakland has the most comprehensive equity program to date in the country. \nBrittany Harris is an eclectic creator with a wide-range of interests and talents ranging from art to social justice. As a digital illustrator\, she creates art with bold colors\, abstract shapes\, and charismatic characters that expresses Black femininity with power and style while giving voice to important social issues. As a social justice advocate\, Brittany worked within an international non-profit where she supported advocacy programs designed to end poverty and further justice reform. Brittany holds her Masters of Arts in Educational Leadership\, Politics\, and Advocacy from New York University\, a B.S. in Organizational Leadership from Colorado State University\, and an A.A. in Apparel Management from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

SUMMARY:Jewish Identity & Advertising: Posters in The Third Reich
DESCRIPTION:The rise of the Third Reich had an indelible impact on graphic design. Some poster artists chose to promote the Nazi cause\, others fled persecution to find success in new countries\, while others were murdered by the governments that once touted their work as “genius.” At the same time\, prominent poster collections\, like those of Julius Paul and Hans Sachs\, were confiscated and dispersed\, destroying some of the best archives ever created within the medium. \nThis conversation will explore the many paths poster designers and collectors were forced to take during and after World War II. Of particular interest will be the work of Walter Herz and other Jewish posterists who emigrated to the United Kingdom to forge new identities and further shape graphic design history\, contrasted with the tragic story of Hans Sachs whose landmark archive of posters was only recently restituted to his heirs.  \nIndependent scholar Eve M. Kahn is a regular contributor of features to The New York Times\, where she served as weekly Antiques columnist from 2008 to 2016. Her 2019 book\, Forever Seeing New Beauties: The Forgotten Impressionist Mary Rogers Williams\, 1857-1907 (Wesleyan University Press)\, received the Sarton Women’s Book Award and prizes from the Connecticut League of History Organizations\, among other groups. Her biography now in progress is tentatively titled To Fight for the Poor With My Pen: The Forgotten Journalist Zoe Anderson Norris\, 1860-1914. \nKristina Parsons is the Leon Levy Curatorial Assistant at the Jewish Museum in New York. Her research centers around technology\, dress\, and migration in the twentieth century. Kristina has worked on exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. She has also contributed essays to publications including E. McKnight Kauffer: The Artist in Advertising (2020). \nSuzanne Glass studied at Cambridge University\, UK and at the Interpreting School of Zurich\, Switzerland. Suzanne was deeply involved in the retrieval of the world’s best known poster collection\, stolen by the Nazis from her great grandfather Hans Sachs. She is currently working on a film script on the subject\, entitled\, ” Einstein’s Dentist and his Posters.” She is a widely published journalist and the author of three novels: The Interpreter and The Sculptors\, both published by Random House\, and The Milliner\, recently completed. Her play The Hatmaker was produced Off Broadway and published by Samuel French. Suzanne lives in New York with her 2 boys\, Zachary 10 and Gabriel 2.  \nThis virtual event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. SUMMARY:Lucian Bernhard & The Object Poster
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to partner with design historian Steven Heller for an evening examining the iconic and impactful work of Lucian Bernhard. \nLucian Bernhard is the putative father of the modern advertising poster. He came to be best known for the Sachplakat—or object poster\, a subset of the greater Plakatstil (poster style) genre. Unlike the Jewish\, Vienna-based Julius Klinger\, Bernhard left Germany before 1933 and became a more variegated commercial artist\, producing type face families\, children’s books\, logos\, and identity systems. This wide-ranging talk will examine Bernhard’s European and American accomplishments in the design field he helped to invent. \nSteven Heller is the co-chair of SVA MFA Design / The Designer as Entrepreneur\, and author or editor of 200 books on design\, political art\, and popular culture. He has written extensively about Weimar-era design. Heller is also the recipient of an NEA grant to study Lucian Bernhard’s life and work.\n\nJulius Klinger: Posters for a Modern Age comes to Poster House from The Wolfsonian–Florida International University in Miami Beach\, FL.\n\nThis virtual event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. SUMMARY:Posters\, Politics\, and Satire: A Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Political satire is as old as civilization. As long as there have been different points of view\, people have found a way to lambast their opponents. \nFew modern satirists are as well-known as Hunter S. Thompson\, whose biting points of view are beautifully expressed in the posters on view in Freak Power. But where is political satire in posters today? And how do contemporary designers use humor to challenge public perception?  This afternoon\, join poster makers Winston Tseng and Maia Lorian as they discuss how they’ve used posters to point out hypocrisy\, corruption\, and greed in the political system. \nWinston Tseng is a graphic artist based in New York City. He graduated from UC Berkeley and his background is in the skateboard industry\, where for over a decade he’s worked for brands including: Birdhouse\, Emerica\, Etnies\, Jenkem\, and Enjoi. At Enjoi\, he was the art director until 2014 and created hundreds of skateboards\, tshirts\, and apparel graphics. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution (Washington\, DC)\, Poster House Museum (New York\, NY)\, and Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art (New York\, NY). \nMaia Lorian is an actor\, creator\, Native New Yorker\, and artistic director of A Presidential Parody—a Guerrilla art ad takeover with live street art performances and interventions around NYC. As an artist\, her work has been featured in Hyperallergic and The Nation\, Street Art NYC\, and many others. Lorian’s pieces are in the permanent collection of Poster House Museum and The 45 Library. Her work as an actor has influenced her work as an artist\, credits include SNL (NBC)\, Flight of the Conchords (HBO)\, The Onion News Network (IFC)\, and many original works of theater. \nThis virtual event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. A recording of the event will be made available for all registered attendees. Closed Captioning will be provided. Questions about access?
