SUMMARY:The History of the Afro with Michele Washington
DESCRIPTION:Join designer\, researcher\, writer\, and educator Michele Washington as she virtually guides us through the history of the AFRO\, illuminating how this ubiquitous hairstyle has endured over time\, from the late 1950s till today. Inspired by the powerful coiffs on display in You Won’t Bleed Me: How Blaxploitation Posters Defined Cool & Delivered Profits\, she will discuss how the Afro is ingrained in this genre of film\, how it defined Black beauty and visual culture\, and why it should be viewed as more than just a hairstyle. Natural hair has spawned a million-dollar Black hair care industry\, fostering an advertising shift during the ‘60s and ‘70s\,\ncementing the Afro’s ongoing popularity. \nMichele Y. Washington is a facilitator of design\, research\, and strategy who works with various cultural and community-based projects. She is an A’Lelia Bundles Columbia University Community Scholar; she holds a Master of Fine Arts in Design Criticism from the School of Visual Arts and a Master of Science in Visual Communications from the Pratt Institute. Michele is also the founder of Curious Story Lab\, a podcast and short documentary film series featuring designers\, architects\, urbanists\, fashion and product designers\, and food designers of color. \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. A recording of the event will be made available for all registered attendees. Questions about access? SUMMARY:Real Hot Girl S#!T: Black Womanhood in Blaxploitation & Beyond (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the current exhibition You Won’t Bleed Me: How Blaxploitation Posters Defined Cool & Delivered Profits\, Poster House is thrilled to welcome Dr. Robin Boylorn for an engaging conversation on representations of Black women in blaxploitation films and contemporary popular culture. In this wide ranging talk\, Dr. Boylorn will examine hypersexualized portrayals of Black women from the height of the blaxploitation era. She’ll juxtapose these depictions with contemporary representations of Black women in hip hop\, scrutinizing the role of agency and authorship in these issues. Questions strongly encouraged! \nNote: This event is intended for mature audiences and may include nudity and sexual content for educational purposes. Viewer discretion is advised. \nDr. Robin M. Boylorn is an accomplished scholar\, activist\, writer\, speaker\, and thinker. Her work concentrates on ways of documenting marginalized lives and making them accessible and available to wide audiences. She seeks to give voice to silenced experiences and offer strategies for talking about and across difference (in its many manifestations). Boylorn is the author of Sweetwater: Black Women and Narratives of Resilience and a member of the Crunk Feminist Collective. \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. A recording of the event will be made available for all registered attendees. Questions about access? SUMMARY:Foxy Brown Screening at Nitehawk Cinema
DESCRIPTION:In honor of the current exhibition You Won’t Bleed Me\, Poster House is thrilled to partner with Nitehawk Cinema for a 35mm screening of the blaxploitation classic Foxy Brown. See Pam Greer’s iconic performance as the titular character on the big screen as it was meant to be seen! Featuring a live pre-show musical performance by Morricone Youth\, playing classics inspired by the movie soundtrack.  \nOne of the most important and influential films that defined the genre is Foxy Brown. The film represents the peak of both the popularity of Blaxploitation and arguably the genre’s biggest and most enduring star — Pam Grier. With its killer soundtrack\, sex appeal and audacious action\, its the perfect vehicle to showcase Grier’s unique screen presence (“She’s a whole lotta woman\,” as one character famously says) and a time capsule of what Blaxploitation was at its best and its most outrageous.  \nThis event is in-person and ticketed through Nitehawk Cinema.

On Christmas Eve in 1894\, the Lemercier printing firm was tasked with making a poster for the reopening of a play featuring one of the world’s most famous actresses\, Sarah Bernhardt. Mucha happened to be one of the few illustrators available over the holidays\, so it fell on him to design the poster by New Year’s Day. What resulted was a poster that captivated Paris — one that would launch his design career and help him become one of the most celebrated graphic designers of the Art Nouveau period. This is the story of Alphonse Mucha and how his posters changed the advertising world. \nJoin New York Adventure Club as we explore the Paris portion of Alphonse Mucha’s career\, and the exhibition Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouveau / Nouvelle Femme formerly debuted at Poster House — through exhibitions\, events\, and publications\, this museum presents a global view of posters from their earliest appearance in the late 1800s\, to their present-day use. \nLed by Poster House Chief Curator\, Angelina Lippert\, our digital showcase of Alphonse Mucha and his ground-breaking posters will include: \n\nAn overview of Poster House\, the first museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to posters\, which opened its doors in the Summer of 2019\nThe story behind Alphonse Mucha’s rise to fame and advertising career\, which all started when he met the legendary Sarah Bernhardt\, the most famous actress of the time\nA discussion around Mucha’s artistic style\, which used alluring\, strong women to advertise everything from cookies to bicycles\, and alcohol to rolling papers — all inspired by his professional relationship with Bernhardt\nThe profound impact of Mucha on the future of posters\, and how his designs helped elevate women to be a part of a buddying 20th-century world with newfound independence and social agency\n\nAfterward\, We’ll have a Q&A with Angelina — any and all questions about the Mucha or general poster history are welcomed and encouraged! \nCan’t make it live? Don’t worry\, you’ll have access to the full replay for one week! \nSee you there\, virtually! \n*Immediately upon registering\, you will receive a separate\, automated email containing the link to join this webinar \n**For the best possible viewing experience\, please ensure you’re using the latest version of your internet browser — Google Chrome is the most compatible. Exact technical requirements and a webinar user guide will be shared in the automated confirmation email upon registration. \n***A full replay of the experience will be available to all registered guests for up to a week

SUMMARY:Psychedelic Posters: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:The psychedelic poster movement coincided with the rise of American counterculture\, the use of mind-expanding substances like marijuana and LSD\, and the explosion of the rock-n-roll scene in the late 1960s. \nFrom about 1966 to 1970\, this movement flourished in San Francisco\, the center of the hippie universe. Like many of the Belle Époque posters from the early 1900s\, psychedelic posters were first and foremost advertising a product–the weekly rock dance concerts at venues like the Fillmore Auditorium and the Avalon Ballroom. \nBut instead of delivering clear messages like traditional posters\, psychedelic posters often had to be deciphered by the viewer. The main principle of the psychedelic poster was not to deliver messages clearly and directly\, but rather to tease\, engage\, and entertain for as long as possible. Its stylistic trademarks were obscured and disguised lettering\, vivid color\, vibrant energy\, flowing organic patterns\, and a mix of cultural images from different places and time periods. The style was also tribal in the sense that if you could decipher and appreciate these posters then you were truly a member of the hippie subculture – you were hip\, man. \nJoin psychedelic poster expert and Bahr Gallery owner Ted Bahr for a trip back to San Francisco in the late 1960s\, and learn about the context\, the artists\, and the great works that were created during this furious burst of creativity – some of which you will see firsthand as part of Poster House’s Permanent Timeline. \nThis event is in person at Poster House. Poster House operates in compliance with the Key to NYC mandate. All museum visitors older than 12 must show proof that they have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Tonight\, he will be joined by the prolific designer and illustrator Jim McMullan\, whose work appears extensively in the exhibition The Push Pin Legacy. McMullan has created images for countless magazine stories\, books for adults and children\, record covers\, U.S. stamps\, murals\, and animated films. SUMMARY:At the Grindhouse with Adam Howard and Josiah Howard
DESCRIPTION:Blaxploitation is often harshly critiqued as a cinematic genre for its negative representations of Blackness by relying on stereotypes\, the hypersexualization of women\, and ridiculous caricatures. In the 1970s\, however\, Blaxploitation saved many Hollywood studios from the brink of bankruptcy while breaking barriers for Black representation in mainstream media. Join curator Adam Howard in conversation with author Josiah Howard (no relation) as the pair discuss Blaxploitation with the nuance and complexity the topic deserves. Together they’ll explore both the good and the bad of the genre and discuss its lasting impact on contemporary film culture. \nAdam Howard is a Senior Associate Producer at the Full Frontal with Samantha Bee show. He is also a co-creator and Executive Producer of the Full Release with Samantha Bee podcast. Prior to his career in late night comedy\, he spent several years as a journalist\, writing about pop culture and politics for The Daily Beast\, Playboy\, NBC News\, and The Nation. He is a graduate of Columbia University’s School of Journalism and studied film history and screenwriting at Bard College. In his spare time\, he illustrates his own alternative movie posters and resides in Brooklyn\, N.Y. with his wife Elizabeth Rosado and their dog Cookie. \nJosiah Howard is a senior contributor at The Deuce and Furious Cinema and is the author of Blaxploitation Cinema: the Essential Reference Guide. His writing credits include articles for the American Library of Congress\, the New York Times and Reader’s Digest. \nThis event is in person at Poster House\, and a recording will be made available on our vimeo page for our virtual audience.
