SUMMARY:Art for an Equitable Cannabis Industry
DESCRIPTION:While drug reform was a central issue of Hunter S. Thomspon’s 1969 Freak Power campaign\, it still remains at the forefront of civic discourse. How has society’s perception of marijuana evolved over the past 40 years? What drugs should be decriminalized?  \nPoster House is thrilled to partner with Lanese Martin\, founder of The Hood Incubator\, and artist & designer Bee Harris for a conversation on their recent collaboration as part of Amplifier Art’s Cannabis Justice Now campaign. This conversation will center on their creative poster intervention for a racially just approach to marijuana legalization as well as the intersection of art and politics on this crucial issue. Questions strongly encouraged!  \nLanese Martin is an award-winning community organizer with a background in electoral campaigns\, policy and advocacy on issues impacting Black people and the areas they work\, live & play – Lanese supports projects that address systemic inequality. As co-Founder of The Hood Incubator\, she guides the national grassroots organization’s mission to end the drug war and reverse its impacts on Black communities. Lanese also Chairs the City of Oakland’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission. Under Lanese’s leadership the city of Oakland has the most comprehensive equity program to date in the country. \nBrittany Harris is an eclectic creator with a wide-range of interests and talents ranging from art to social justice. As a digital illustrator\, she creates art with bold colors\, abstract shapes\, and charismatic characters that expresses Black femininity with power and style while giving voice to important social issues. As a social justice advocate\, Brittany worked within an international non-profit where she supported advocacy programs designed to end poverty and further justice reform. Brittany holds her Masters of Arts in Educational Leadership\, Politics\, and Advocacy from New York University\, a B.S. in Organizational Leadership from Colorado State University\, and an A.A. in Apparel Management from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

SUMMARY:Jewish Identity & Advertising: Posters in The Third Reich
DESCRIPTION:The rise of the Third Reich had an indelible impact on graphic design. Some poster artists chose to promote the Nazi cause\, others fled persecution to find success in new countries\, while others were murdered by the governments that once touted their work as “genius.” At the same time\, prominent poster collections\, like those of Julius Paul and Hans Sachs\, were confiscated and dispersed\, destroying some of the best archives ever created within the medium. \nThis conversation will explore the many paths poster designers and collectors were forced to take during and after World War II. Of particular interest will be the work of Walter Herz and other Jewish posterists who emigrated to the United Kingdom to forge new identities and further shape graphic design history\, contrasted with the tragic story of Hans Sachs whose landmark archive of posters was only recently restituted to his heirs.  \nIndependent scholar Eve M. Kahn is a regular contributor of features to The New York Times\, where she served as weekly Antiques columnist from 2008 to 2016. Her 2019 book\, Forever Seeing New Beauties: The Forgotten Impressionist Mary Rogers Williams\, 1857-1907 (Wesleyan University Press)\, received the Sarton Women’s Book Award and prizes from the Connecticut League of History Organizations\, among other groups. Her biography now in progress is tentatively titled To Fight for the Poor With My Pen: The Forgotten Journalist Zoe Anderson Norris\, 1860-1914. \nKristina Parsons is the Leon Levy Curatorial Assistant at the Jewish Museum in New York. Her research centers around technology\, dress\, and migration in the twentieth century. Kristina has worked on exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum. She has also contributed essays to publications including E. McKnight Kauffer: The Artist in Advertising (2020). \nSuzanne Glass studied at Cambridge University\, UK and at the Interpreting School of Zurich\, Switzerland. Suzanne was deeply involved in the retrieval of the world’s best known poster collection\, stolen by the Nazis from her great grandfather Hans Sachs. She is currently working on a film script on the subject\, entitled\, ” Einstein’s Dentist and his Posters.” She is a widely published journalist and the author of three novels: The Interpreter and The Sculptors\, both published by Random House\, and The Milliner\, recently completed. Her play The Hatmaker was produced Off Broadway and published by Samuel French. Suzanne lives in New York with her 2 boys\, Zachary 10 and Gabriel 2.  \nThis virtual event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. A recording will be provided to all registered attendees. Questions about access? Please email Salvador Muñoz\, Public Programs Manager\, at Salvador@posterhouse.org

SUMMARY:Lucian Bernhard & The Object Poster
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to partner with design historian Steven Heller for an evening examining the iconic and impactful work of Lucian Bernhard. \nLucian Bernhard is the putative father of the modern advertising poster. He came to be best known for the Sachplakat—or object poster\, a subset of the greater Plakatstil (poster style) genre. Unlike the Jewish\, Vienna-based Julius Klinger\, Bernhard left Germany before 1933 and became a more variegated commercial artist\, producing type face families\, children’s books\, logos\, and identity systems. This wide-ranging talk will examine Bernhard’s European and American accomplishments in the design field he helped to invent. \nSteven Heller is the co-chair of SVA MFA Design / The Designer as Entrepreneur\, and author or editor of 200 books on design\, political art\, and popular culture. He has written extensively about Weimar-era design. Heller is also the recipient of an NEA grant to study Lucian Bernhard’s life and work.\n\nJulius Klinger: Posters for a Modern Age comes to Poster House from The Wolfsonian–Florida International University in Miami Beach\, FL.\n\nThis virtual event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. A recording of the event will be made available for all registered attendees. Closed Captioning will be provided. Questions about access? SUMMARY:Posters\, Politics\, and Satire: A Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Political satire is as old as civilization. As long as there have been different points of view\, people have found a way to lambast their opponents. \nFew modern satirists are as well-known as Hunter S. Thompson\, whose biting points of view are beautifully expressed in the posters on view in Freak Power. But where is political satire in posters today? And how do contemporary designers use humor to challenge public perception?  This afternoon\, join poster makers Winston Tseng and Maia Lorian as they discuss how they’ve used posters to point out hypocrisy\, corruption\, and greed in the political system. \nWinston Tseng is a graphic artist based in New York City. He graduated from UC Berkeley and his background is in the skateboard industry\, where for over a decade he’s worked for brands including: Birdhouse\, Emerica\, Etnies\, Jenkem\, and Enjoi. At Enjoi\, he was the art director until 2014 and created hundreds of skateboards\, tshirts\, and apparel graphics. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution (Washington\, DC)\, Poster House Museum (New York\, NY)\, and Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art (New York\, NY). \nMaia Lorian is an actor\, creator\, Native New Yorker\, and artistic director of A Presidential Parody—a Guerrilla art ad takeover with live street art performances and interventions around NYC. As an artist\, her work has been featured in Hyperallergic and The Nation\, Street Art NYC\, and many others. Lorian’s pieces are in the permanent collection of Poster House Museum and The 45 Library. Her work as an actor has influenced her work as an artist\, credits include SNL (NBC)\, Flight of the Conchords (HBO)\, The Onion News Network (IFC)\, and many original works of theater. \nThis virtual event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. A recording of the event will be made available for all registered attendees. Closed Captioning will be provided. Questions about access? SUMMARY:The Top-Heavy G: Julius Klinger's Lettering and Type Design with Paul Shaw
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to partner once again with its favorite type historian\, Paul Shaw\, for an afternoon exploring the lettering and type design of renowned poster designer Julius Klinger. This event is co-presented by Typographics. \nSpanning nearly four decades\, Klinger’s posters and other designs showcase a wide range of lettering styles. Some of them were common in Austria and Germany in the period between the formation of the Vienna Secession and the outbreak of The Great War; and some reflected themes common to Art Deco after the war. But others are unique to Klinger. Shaw will lead us on a detailed (even nerdy) look at the evolution of Klinger’s lettering and type\, placing him in context with Koloman Moser\, Alfred Roller and other members of the Vienna Secession; and the German sachplakat artists\, such as Lucian Bernhard\, associated with the printers Hollerbaum & Schmidt. His presentation will draw primarily from Julius Klinger: Posters for a Modern Age\, on loan from the Wolfsonian in Miami Beach\, is currently on view at Poster House in New York City. \nPaul Shaw is a designer and design historian with a specialty in letterforms and type. He is the author of Revival Type\, Helvetica and the New York City Subway System; co-author of Blackletter and National Identity; and editor of The Eternal Letter. He teaches at Parsons School of Design and The School of Visual Arts. He has previously done presentations for Poster House on the lettering of Alfons Mucha and the typography of post-World War II posters. \nJulius Klinger: Posters for a Modern Age comes to Poster House from The Wolfsonian–Florida International University in Miami Beach\, FL.

SUMMARY:Fiona McDonnell: Virtual Studio Tour
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is dedicated to celebrating all voices within the poster community. In an effort to share with our audience the widest array of poster talent\, we are partnering with numerous young designers around the world to create Instagram Live Studio Tours—hour-long sessions on our Instagram account in which up and coming graphic artists give us a personalized peek inside their poster-making world. \nTonight\, we are featuring Fiona McDonnell (she/her). McDonnell is a freelance illustrator based in the North of Ireland. Using her distinct style of illustration\, McDonnell has been commissioned by a variety of commercial clients including LUSH\, Facebook\, and Dazed\, all while sustaining a personal practice. Poster design has been a driving force throughout McDonnell’s career\, with the accessibility of posters as art for the masses being what initially drew her to the medium. Since then\, she describes each poster project as\, “a chance to challenge myself by exploring new ways of creating and combining illustration\, typography\, and visual communication.” The illustrations in these posters\, along with McDonnell’s overall illustration practice\, are often accompanied by commentary and self-reflection on social issues\, politics\, music\, and film (or whatever else she may be interested in at the time.) \nInstagram handle: @fionaamcd

SUMMARY:Letterforms of the Viennese Secession with Letterform Archive
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to partner once again with Letterform Archive for an exploration of the letterforms of the Viennese Secession. \nAt the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries\, Western design underwent a clash of ideas: those who sought a return to the handcrafts of the past\, and those who wanted to create entirely new modes of making; those who found inspiration in the flowing forms of nature\, and those who embraced the sleek geometry of the machine. These ideals are viscerally expressed in the type and typography of the time\, especially within the Jugendstil and Viennese Secession movements which continue to influence design after 100 years. Stephen Coles will take us on a floral and florid tour of Letterform Archive’s extensive collection from this period\, including advertising\, fine printing\, and typeface specimens. \nStephen Coles\, Letterform Archive’s Associate Curator & Editorial Director\, joined the staff after serving on our Board of Directors since its inception. Born in Salt Lake City\, he moved to San Francisco in 2004 to serve as FontShop’s creative director. He later worked as an independent consultant\, connecting font makers with font users\, and wrote the book The Anatomy of Type. With his background in design and journalism\, combined with an obsession for type history\, Stephen is responsible for the online face and voice of the Archive\, and helps to shape the future of the collection. He continues to publish the influential websites Typographica and Fonts In Use. \nThis virtual event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. A recording will be provided to all registered attendees. Questions about access? Please email Salvador Muñoz\, Public Programs Manager\, at Salvador@posterhouse.org

SUMMARY:Virtual Cooking Class With Grace Young
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of AAPI history month\, Poster House is thrilled to once again partner with award-winning author Grace Young\, dubbed the “Stir-Fry Guru” by The New York Times & recipient of the 2020 James Beard Digital Media Award\, for a timely & tasty virtual cooking class.  If you’re ready to master the wok\, join the Wok Therapist as she demystifies the art of stir-frying and demonstrates how to prepare Spicy Cashew Chicken. The high heat and quick cooking uses minimal fat to caramelize the vegetables and sear the chicken\, bringing out the best in both. She will cover the essentials for stir-fry success and how to choose a wok. \nDuring this live event\, Grace will also discuss the work that she’s been doing to support and preserve Manhattan’s Chinatown. Last March\, Poster House partnered with Grace and videographer Dan Ahn to create Coronavirus: Chinatown Stories. The video series chronicles the impact of COVID-19 on Manhattan’s Chinatown and has been featured at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. She also created the #SaveChineseRestaurants campaign with the James Beard Foundation. \nIn light of the ongoing targeted violence against Asians and Asian Americans\, all proceeds from this program will support Grace Young’s & Asian Americans For Equality’s “Safe with Sound” campaign. Please consider making an additional donation in support of this important campaign. \nPrep your ingredients ahead of time and stir-fry along with Grace. \nManhattan Chinatown Resources \nGrace recommends 14-inch flat-bottomed carbon-steel wok from KK Discount\, 78 Mulberry Street \nAsian produce & groceries \n88 Natural Food\, 88 Mulberry Street \nPo Wing Hong Supermarket\, 49 Elizabeth Street \nMarks Wine & Spirits\, 53 Mott Street \nTeas \nGrand Tea Imports\, 298 Grand Street \nPhoto Credit: Christine Han/Kitchn
