SUMMARY:Julius Klinger & Identity
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to host Jeremy Aynsley for a discussion that will consider the complex role of identity in Julius Klinger’s work. DESCRIPTION:Vikings and centaurs and flamingos\, oh my! Our latest exhibition Julius Klinger: Posters for a Modern Age is full of fun and flamboyant posters that are perfect for outlandish interpretations. Join Poster House for an entertaining evening of wild conjecture on the contemporary queer subtexts of these extravagant images. First\, author and illustrator John Paul Brammer will give a speculative queer reading of the exhibition from a contemporary perspective. Then\, Ben Miller of the Schwules Museum\, the world’s largest LGBTQI* museum\, will give insights into the history of queer culture in Germany and share amazing pieces from it’s extensive collection. You don’t want to miss this  \nJohn Paul Brammer is an author and illustrator from Oklahoma currently based in Brooklyn. He is the creator of ¡Hola Papi!\, a popular advice column catering to LGBTQ issues\, and has a memoir-in-essays of the same name being published with Simon & Schuster’s flagship imprint in June. His artwork has appeared in The Washington Post as well as on his print shop\, which has customers all over the world.  \nBen Miller is a writer and historian living in Berlin\, where he is a Doctoral Fellow at the Graduate School of Global Intellectual History at the Freie Universität\, has taught on queer history\, literature\, and visual cultures at the Humboldt Universität and The New Centre for Research & Practice\, and been awarded long-term research stipendia from the Deutscher Akademischer Auschtauschdienst and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Since 2018\, he has been a member of the board of the Schwules Museum\, the world’s largest independent institution devoted to archiving and preserving LGBTQI* histories and visual culture. In 2020\, he co-curated the Schwules Museum exhibit 100 Objects: An Archive of Feelings\, an affective reconsideration of the Museum’s collection and of queer archival practice.  \nThis event is presented in partnership with ONE Archives Foundation and Queer Design Club. \nJulius Klinger: Posters for a Modern Age is organized by the Wolfsonian. \nThis virtual event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. SUMMARY:Oppy: The Emily Post of the Subway
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to partner with the New York Transit Museum for an evening dedicated to little-known female poster designer Amelia Opdyke Jones (“Oppy”). Considered the Emily Post of the subway\, Oppy created decades’ worth of instructional posters indicating how one should behave when riding the nation’s finest transit system. Full of humor\, wit\, and valuable information these posters still bring delight to viewers today and are a treasured part of the Transit Museum’s permanent collection. \nJodi Shapiro is a lifelong New Yorker who has worked at the New York Transit Museum since 2014. Prior to becoming Associate Curator\, she worked in the Museum’s archive (with all the cool photos). She’s curated shows about the Second Avenue Subway\, the IRT Flushing Line\, the Redbird fleet of subway cars\, and the Pullis Brothers. \nBefore she joined the Transit Museum family\, Jodi had many jobs: data wrangler\, record label stooge\, graphic designer\, investigative journalist. The most significant of these was working as an archivist for several artists’ estates\, including a number of world-renown photographers. She holds a Master’s in Library Science\, has way too many cameras\, and fears her enormous LP record collection will be the death of her some day.

SUMMARY:Can Art Stop a War? The Power of Posters
DESCRIPTION:From the Russian Revolution to the now-decades-long war in Afghanistan\, posters have been central to winning the hearts and minds of the people who pay the costs of war with their lives and their tax dollars. They also have been critical for mobilizing opposition to war. Although many predicted that paper posters would become obsolete in the digital age\, they continue to be produced in great numbers. \nCarol A. Wells\, founder and executive director of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics\, will show how posters have been used to protest injustice and promote social change throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The talk will also highlight the long political poster tradition of appropriation and image recycling. \nWells is an activist\, art historian\, curator\, writer\, and poster collector.  In 1988\, she founded CSPG\, an educational and research archive in Los Angeles. Its more than 90\,000 social movement posters from the 19th century to the present\, include the largest collection of post-WWII posters in the U.S.  Wells believes that posters can combat public apathy and feelings of helplessness\, as well as stimulating political debate. \nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. Questions about access? Please email Salvador Muñoz\, Public Programs Manager\, at Salvador@posterhouse.org

SUMMARY:Gonzo Artivism: The Art & Activism of the Freak Power Movement
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is excited to be joined by Yuri Zupancic\, co-curator of Freak Power\, in exploring the intersections of art and activism. In this wide-ranging talk\, Yuri will explore how the Freak Power movement blurred the lines between politics and art to inspire change by any medium necessary.   \nHunter Thompson once said\, “Politics is the art of controlling your environment.” He invented Gonzo Journalism by mixing fact and fantasy to paint a vivid picture of reality. Satire and political theater were hallmarks of his campaign for sheriff. Thomas W. Benton\, Ralph Steadman\, and other Freak Power artists took wildly creative approaches in addressing civic concerns. Zupancic will highlight some poignant —and hilarious— examples of artistic activism in the posters\, advertisements and antics of Freak Power politicians and supporters beginning in 1969 and continuing to this day. \nYuri Zupancic is an independent curator and artist based in Paris. His work has been published internationally and he’s held curatorial and organizational roles in over 50 museum and gallery exhibitions in the USA\, EU and UK. \n\nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. Questions about access? Please email Salvador Muñoz\, Public Programs Manager\, at Salvador@posterhouse.org

SUMMARY:Viennese Lettering: A Virtual Night With Paul Shaw
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to partner once again with our favorite type historian\, Paul Shaw\, for an evening exploring lettering and the Vienna Secession. \nFrom Koloman Moser and Alfred Roller to Lucian Bernhard and Ludwig Hohlwein to Peter Behrens and Otto Eckmann\, lettering of this period was varied\, innovative\, and of a consistently high quality. It was an integral part of countless posters\, advertising displays\, and fine books\, and in the 1960s and 1980s exerted an influence on American designers. Viennese lettering—through fonts such as Shaw’s Kolo—continues to fascinate and inspire designers today. \nPaul Shaw is a designer and design historian with a specialty in letterforms and type. He is the author of Revival Type\, Helvetica and the New York City Subway System; co-author of Blackletter and National Identity; and editor of The Eternal Letter. He teaches at Parsons School of Design and The School of Visual Arts. \n This online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. SUMMARY:Conversations on Design & Race: Getting Back to Our Roots
DESCRIPTION:Join designers Kelly Walters\, Jason Alejandro\, Anne H. Berry\, and David Jon Walker for a panel discussion on how the influence of family\, cultural origins\, and ancestral heritage takes form in design practice. The designers will look reflectively at their upbringing\, present objects that maintain cultural significance\, and share their experiences as design students\, educators\, and practitioners\, as discussed inBlack\, Brown + Latinx Design Educators: Conversations on Design and Race by Kelly Walters. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists and to order copies of Black\, Brown + Latinx Design Educators. All attendees will receive a 10% Discount on the book in our Shop! \nAbout the book: In Black\, Brown + Latinx Design Educators\, Kelly Walters collects twelve deeply personal interviews with graphic design educators of color who teach at colleges and universities across the United States and Canada. The book centers the unique narratives of Black\, Brown\, and Latinx design educators\, from their childhood experiences to their navigation of undergraduate and graduate studies and their career paths in academia and practice.  The interviewees represent a cross-section of ethnic and multiracial backgrounds–African American\, Jamaican\, Indian\, Pakistani\, Puerto Rican\, Dominican\, Mexican\, and Brazilian. Their impactful stories offer invaluable perspectives for students and emerging designers of color\, creating an entry point to address the complexities of race in design. \nJason Alejandro is a Puerto Rican graphic designer and educator. He is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at the College of New Jersey. His work examines\, addresses\, and questions aspects of cultural identity\, professional practice and critical pedagogy through research\, making\, and writing. He previously taught at Rutgers University\, Lehigh University\, Kean University\, and the University of Pennsylvania. Jason received his MFA in Graphic Design from Vermont College of Fine Arts. \nAnne H. Berry is a writer\, designer\, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Design at Cleveland State University. Her research focuses on design education and ethnic and racial representation within the field of graphic design. She is a 2018 Design Incubation Fellow\, \nand she recently published an essay titled “The Black Designer’s Identity” for Recognize\, an online design anthology presented by InVision that features essays from Indigenous people and people of color. \nDavid Jon Walker is a Graphic Designer and Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville\, Tennessee. He is also principal of Rhealistic Design\, a design consultancy that is active locally and nationally. As a sought-after Black creative\, Walker works with national political candidates\, PACs\, large non-profits\, governmental entities\, and varying businesses lending his talents to their marketing efforts to increase awareness and further campaigns. He examines social cues and the historical past to shape the aesthetic of his visual voice for personal lettering projects. \nKelly Walters is an Assistant Professor and the Associate Director of the BFA Communication Design program in Parsons School of Design at The New School. In her independent design studio Bright Polka Dot\, she works across platforms to create publications\, exhibitions\, and digital experiences for educational and cultural institutions. Her ongoing design research interrogates the complexities of identity\, systems of value\, and shared vernacular in and around Black visual culture.

SUMMARY:The Swiss Grid: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:Join the Society of Design Arts\, AIGA Baltimore\, and Stevenson University for this online talk by Angelina Lippert. \nThe Swiss Grid explores the development and impact of the International Typographic Style\, considered one of the most important movements in graphic design history\, through a selection of posters and ephemera. Influenced by the Concrete art of the Bauhaus and Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography\, the practitioners of this style streamlined compositions through an adherence to geometric grid structures. The results were pared down\, harmonious\, instantly comprehensible designs—masterpieces of communication—that have stood the test of time. To complete the story of Swiss poster history\, companion exhibitions in adjoining galleries will celebrate over 100 years of Swiss design\, from illustrational posters of the prewar period up through the “Swiss punk” movement of the 1970s and beyond. \nABOUT THE PRESENTER\nAngelina Lippert holds an MA in the art of the Russian Avant-Garde from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London\, and a BA in theology and art history from Smith College. Prior to working at Poster House\, Angelina served ten years as a poster specialist at a leading New York City leading auction house. She has produced dozens of auction catalogs and articles\, as well as The Art Deco Poster\, and has lectured at SVA and The Cooper Union. She is a member of AAM\, AAMC\, AIGA\, and is on the Board of Directors for The Ephemera Society of America. Her research interests include German Expressionism\, Soviet film posters\, and the history of food and wine in advertising.

SUMMARY:The Evolution of PSAs with Poster House
DESCRIPTION:Dating back to the 1870s\, Public Service Announcements (PSAs) have been used to communicate messages to the public on a variety of topics. Over the past 150 years\, PSAs have ranged from calls to action to unite the public on war efforts\, to messages conveying safety concerns when riding public transportation.  Many factors are considered when creating PSAs\, including design and placement\, for efficient and effective dissemination of information. \nJoin us after-hours with the New York Transit Museum Associate Curator Jodi Shapiro and Chief Curator of Poster House Angelina Lippert as they explore a general history of PSA posters. Learn more about how PSA messaging has evolved since the late 1800s\, how New York City’s buses and subways have functioned as places where PSAs communicate to straphangers\, and what the future looks like for the medium.
