SUMMARY:Queer History is Poster History
DESCRIPTION:From posters celebrating pride to promoting nightlife events to even combatting the AIDS crisis\, queer culture is deeply embedded in poster history. Poster House is pleased to partner with Silas Munro and Brian Johnson of Polymode for a deep dive into queer touchpoints within the medium. Explore the iconic contributions the queer community has made to the graphic design cannon and how they continue to shape poster history today. Whether advocating for queer rights or advertising the right to have a good time\, posters and queer history go hand in hand. \nSilas Munro is a partner of Polymode and is particularly interested in the often unaddressed postcolonial relationship between design and marginalized communities. His writing appears in the book\, W. E. B. Du Bois’s Data Portraits: Visualizing Black America published by Princeton Architectural Press. Munro has been a visiting critic at MICA\, RISD\, and Yale\, and is a Founding Faculty and CoChair at the MFA Program in Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts. He holds an MFA from CalArts and a BFA from RISD\, where he met Brian Johnson and began collaborating. \nBrian Johnson is a partner of Polymode where he focuses on creative direction\, design production\, writing\, and teaching. Born into a family of printers\, he is deeply invested in the production of good design without sacrificing our humanity or environment. He is a member of the Monacan Nation and holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. His most recent publication\, Queering the Grid: Reading Codes in Dan Friedman’s Teachings (with Silas Munro) has led him to his current design writing research on Friedman’s 1994 Radical Manifesto\, which will be approaching its thirty year anniversary.  \nThis program is presented by CMYK Council\, Poster House’s working advisory board of BIPOC creatives\, designers\, educators\, and museum staff. \n\n\nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. DESCRIPTION:Join Alexander Tochilovsky\, Curator of the Herb Lubalin Study Center of Design and Typography\, for an exploration of the Cyrillic hand-lettering in The Utopian Avant-Garde: Soviet Film Posters of the 1920s. Learn how these varied letterforms were incorporated into the dynamic posters\, helping these compositions captivate audiences over 100 years later. \nOriginally from Odesa\, Ukraine\, Alexander Tochilovsky is a graphic designer\, curator\, researcher\, and teacher. He is the Curator of the Herb Lubalin Study Center at The Cooper Union and is the co-founder of both the Type@Cooper program and the Typographics conference. Alexander has taught design and typography for over 15 years and holds a BFA from The Cooper Union\, and an MFA in graphic design from Cranbrook Academy of Art. \nThis program is presented in partnership with the Typographics conference.

SUMMARY:It Takes a Village: Unsung Women and Their Contributions to Silent Film
DESCRIPTION:In the first two decades of the 20th century\, the nascent silent film industry offered women numerous opportunities to make a significant impact in the field. Mostly marginalized and forgotten over time\, these women contributed heavily to early Hollywood filmmaking\, doing everything from editing to designing\,  producing to directing. While some like Alice Guy-Blaché\, Lois Weber\, and Mary Pickford are well known by cinema buffs\, many unsung pioneers like Clare West\, Elsa Lopez\, and Marion Fairfax still live in obscurity. This lecture will acknowledge these many women’s talents and provide the recognition they deserve. \nFilm historian and writer Mary Mallory is the author of four books and a blogger  on Los Angeles and early film history. She has contributed to the Women Film Pioneers Project\, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival\, and American History magazine. She has lectured at the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum\, Hollywood Heritage Museum\, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UCLA\, and she currently serves on Hollywood Heritage’s Board of Directors. \n\n\n\n\nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. DESCRIPTION:Join guest curator RJ Rushmore for a curatorial tour of Poster House’s first contemporary art exhibition Masked Vigilantes on Silent Motorbikes. Learn how the artists like Swoon\, KAWS\, Jilly Ballistic and more use posters as a medium from which to create entirely new works of art\, repurposing the language of mass communication. Discover how advertising shapes our built environment and how artists leverage sanctioned and unsanctioned public art to disrupt what is commonplace. \nRJ Rushmore is a writer\, curator\, and public art advocate who builds projects that disrupt visual culture. He is a cofounder of Art in Ad Places\, a guerrilla public art campaign across New York City’s former payphones\, and he has curated projects for The L.I.S.A. Project NYC\, Mural Arts Philadelphia\, LMNL Gallery\, and the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery at Haverford College.
