SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Joan Semmel at the Jewish Museum
DESCRIPTION:Poster House members are invited to the Jewish Museum for a private tour of Joan Semmel: In the Flesh at the Jewish Museum. This tour will be jointly led by Isometric Studios\, the team behind the exhibition’s design\, and the museum’s curator of contemporary art\, Rebecca Shaykin.  \nBorn in 1932 into a secular Jewish family in the Bronx\, Semmel trained as an abstract expressionist painter in New York before moving to Spain in 1963\, where she enjoyed early success on an international stage. Upon her return to New York in 1970 as a newly divorced mother of two\, she found community within the burgeoning feminist and anti-censorship movements alongside her peers\, including Judith Bernstein\, Louise Bourgeois\, Joyce Kozloff\, Joan Snyder\, Anita Steckel\, Hannah Wilke\, and other trailblazing women artists. \nIn the Flesh highlights Semmel’s lifelong investigation of the female experience. Spanning more than 50 years of the artist’s practice\, the exhibition offers new perspectives on some of Semmel’s most pivotal series. Works on view include her 1978 painting Sunlight\, one of her iconic self-images and a defining work of the feminist movement\, as well as paintings from her bold\, high-key Erotic Series of the early 1970s\, as well as large\, complex compositions as the nude self-portrait Skin in the Game (2019). \nAccessibility Note: As this is an off-site event\, masks and clear masks are available free of charge with prior notification. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs. SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Love & Fury
DESCRIPTION:Join curator Ian Bradley Perrin for a private\, members-only tour of Love & Fury: New York’s Fight Against AIDS.  \nWhen AIDS hit New York\, posters spoke when institutions stayed silent. In a city wired for visual competition—crowded streets\, subway ads\, nightclub flyers—posters became lifelines. They helped people to find clinics\, mourn the dead\, demand justice\, and fight for the living. \nThis exhibition explores how graphic design shaped New York’s grassroots response to AIDS from 1979 to 2003. Public health campaigns\, agitprop\, benefit flyers\, and club handbills offer more than just messages—they map how communities built survival systems from below\, often before the state would act.  \nLight refreshments will be served. \nThis exhibition is rated R for sexually explicit imagery and text. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs. SUMMARY:Community AIDS Memorial Quilt-Making Workshops
DESCRIPTION:The AIDS Memorial Quilt\, comprising more than 50\,000 individual panels created by participants around the world\, functions as a collective\, living archive\, honoring those who have died from HIV/AIDS and related causes while documenting decades of activism\, grief\, and care. \nIn conjunction with Love & Fury: New York’s Fight Against AIDS\, Poster House and the New York City AIDS Memorial are proud to co-present two free community quilt-making workshops. \nLed by artist Erika deVries\, participants will collaborate on the design and creation of commemorative quilt panels honoring members of the poster and design communities lost to HIV and AIDS. The workshops will also address the history and impact of the AIDS Quilt while encouraging intergenerational dialogue and community-building. \nNo sewing experience required! Lunch will be provided to attendees.  \nImage credit: AIDS Memorial Quilt-Making Workshops\, March 2025\, at SVA\, courtesy of the New York City AIDS Memorial. Photos by Alexander Sargent. \nThe New York City AIDS Memorial is a living monument honoring the more than 100\,000 New Yorkers who have died of AIDS and recognizing the caregivers\, activists\, and communities who responded to the epidemic with compassion and resolve. Located in a public park at the former site of St. Vincent’s Hospital in Greenwich Village\, considered by many to be the epicenter of the crisis in New York\, the memorial presents free\, year-round public programs and contemporary art commissions that preserve history\, activate public memory\, and affirm the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS. \nErika deVries is a visual artist based in Kingston\, New York\, whose practice centers textiles\, adornment\, and neon light as language for collective memory\, storytelling and care. Working with fabric and found garments alongside neon ritual forms and transcriptions of the handwriting of her children and beloved relatives\, she explores how grief\, devotion\, and language take shape. DeVries cofounded the social sculptural spaces Cygnets Way and Your Mom & the Swan\, and is a longtime creative collaborator with the queer neon art studio Lite Brite Neon. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. SUMMARY:Visita guiada en español: Amor y furia
SUMMARY:Members Only: Love & Fury & Poetry & Prose
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Attendees of this event must enter the museum via the 24th Street Entrance. The 23d street entrance will be closed for a private event.  \nIn honor of National Poetry Month and the exhibition Love & Fury: New York’s Fight Against AIDS\, Poster House members are invited to a special evening hosted by artists Eleanor Kipping and C. (Constantine Jones) of the cultural collective What Would an HIV Doula Do? (WWHIVDD?).   \nEleanor and C. will lead a workshop in which participants will consider poetry\, visual language\, and politics within the context of the Love & Fury exhibition. Attendees will be invited to engage in a variety of ways\, including discussion\, writing\, and observation. This special event will be part exhibition tour and part creative exercise\, encouraging a serious exploration of the current of lived human experiences that drove the grassroots response to AIDS from 1979 to 2003.  \nEleanor Kipping is a Brooklyn-based Artist\, Educator and Arts Administrator\, originally from Maine. Her multidisciplinary practice lies at the intersection of performance\, installation and lens-based media and image making. Her work explores the othering of viruses at the intersection of race\, gender\, class and place. Through the examination and deconstruction of historical and contemporary narratives\, she is interested in the public\, private\, and civic negotiations of race\, gender\, in addition to the effect and practice of violence and surveillance. She has been awarded residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture\, School of Visual Arts\, and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and her work has been exhibited at Portland Museum of Art\, Center for Maine Contemporary Art\, Yellow Fish Durational Performance Festival\, and more. \nC. (Constantine Jones) is an interdisciplinary Greek-American “thingmaker” raised in Tennessee and now housed in Brooklyn. Their practice is collaborative in nature and rooted at the intersections of HIV/AIDS futurity\, communal mythmaking as cultural archive\, and poetry as catalyst for social instigation. They lead courses in composition\, poetry\, and hybrid writing modalities at the City College of New York (CUNY)\, and facilitate workshops at Brooklyn Poets\, Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC)\, Housing Works\, the Brooklyn Museum\, and elsewhere. A lifelong independent student of myth and epic poetry\, C. is currently at work on writing and performing an epic of their own. Their work has been performed or exhibited at various venues across New York City and Tennessee. \nWWHIVDD? is a community of people joined in response to the ongoing AIDS crisis. We understand a doula as someone who holds space during times of transition. We understand HIV as a series of transitions that begin long before a person is tested and that continue after treatment and beyond. We know that since no one gets HIV alone\, no one should have to live with HIV alone. We doula ourselves\, each other\, institutions\, and culture. Asking questions is foundational to our process. \nThis program is suitable for attendees above the age of 15. SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: 100 Years of the Schomburg Center
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Poster House’s current exhibition\, Act Black: Posters from Black American Stage & Screen\, members are invited to a private tour of 100: A Century of Collections\, Community\, and Creativity at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. \nIn 1925\, the New York Public Library opened the Division of Negro Literature\, History and Prints—the forerunner to today’s Schomburg Center—as a special collection at its 135th Street branch in Harlem. The division expanded significantly the following year with the purchase of the personal collection of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg\, the distinguished Puerto Rican–born Black scholar and bibliophile. Schomburg had spent decades collecting books\, manuscripts\, and art that illustrated Black contributions to global history. \nToday\, the Schomburg Center is one of the world’s leading cultural institutions devoted to the preservation and study of materials focused on African American\, African Diasporic\, and African experiences. Its wide-ranging collections illuminate the richness of global Black history\, arts\, and culture\, and continue the tradition established by its namesake. \nThis major exhibition showcases many of the extraordinary items from the Schomburg Center’s collections\, surrounding visitors with the sights\, sounds\, and objects that have shaped this historic institution’s first century.  \nPhoto credit: Aspects of Negro Life: Song of the Towers\, 1934 by Aaron Douglas \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. SUMMARY:First Friday: Monotype Printing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Monotype is a printmaking process that involves applying ink or paint directly onto a printing plate (without first engraving or etching it) to create a unique print. In this hands-on workshop\, multimedia artist Sabrina Sims will guide participants through this expressive process while introducing such techniques as stenciling\, masking\, wet-on-wet blending\, and subtractive layering. \nInspired by the bold visual language found in Act Black: Posters from Black American Stage & Screen and Art for Art House: The Posters of Peter Strausfeld\, participants will experiment with color\, texture\, and composition to create monoprints that reflect themes of storytelling\, illustration\, and independent film culture. \nEveryone will have the opportunity to trade prints at the end of the workshop.  \nNo prior experience will be required and all materials will be provided. \nSabrina Sims (she/her) is a bi\, Black Puerto Rican\, chronically ill artist from the Bronx. Her saturated multimedia work focuses on Black cosmic tech\, softness as a tactile-emotional feeling\, and the sharing of community ideas. She enjoys synthesizing mediums\, including printmaking/zines\, textiles\, biomaterials\, and livecoded audiovisuals. Sabrina organizes several COVID-safer DIY music events and art fairs with a focus on accessibility for disabled creatives. Skill-sharing\, workshops\, and other community-building opportunities for Black Indigenous people is a central part of her practice. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. SUMMARY:First Friday: COVERS—Memory Mixtape & Cover Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by COVERS BY MP3\, this playful\, hands-on workshop invites participants to create a mini CD keychain with a shareable memory playlist\, paired with a self-designed album cover. \nCOVERS BY MP3 is a multimedia community arts project that documents stories from the Korean diaspora through music\, memory\, and recreated album covers featuring participants in place of the original artists. \nIn this workshop\, participants will build a playlist of the music that has shaped their lives and collage an album cover inspired by the memories it evokes. Their design will then be transformed into a mini CD keychain that links to the playlist\, allowing their personal soundtrack to be shared at the tap of a phone. Participants are welcome to bring 1–2 photos to scan and add to their collage. \n \nPrisca Choe is a visual artist and cultural worker based in New York City and Philadelphia. Her work blends traditional Korean craft with contemporary media to explore identity\, memory\, and the stories carried across the diaspora. She is the creator and co-director of COVERS BY MP3\, a multimedia community arts project that documents migration stories through music. Through installations\, wearable art\, and community projects\, Choe creates spaces that play with the tension between preserving and transforming culture. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Act Black
DESCRIPTION:Starting in the 1880s\, Black performers and those invested in telling stories centering Black people attempted to counter the dehumanizing and harmful stereotypes created by white people to portray Black characters. Since theatrical performances are rarely recorded and many of the movies that featured all-Black casts are now considered “lost films” (films where no copies are known to survive)\, advertising posters are sometimes the only remaining evidence of important productions made with Black talent between the 1870s and the 1940s. The posters in this exhibition provide a guide for viewers as they consider how Black storytelling was transformed during its transition from stage to screen. \nJoin curator Es-pranza Humphrey for this private\, members-only tour of Act Black: Posters from Black American Stage & Screen and learn more about the innovative efforts of Black writers\, directors\, and actors to represent Black life and experience for Black audiences. \nLight refreshments will be served. \n \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs.
