SUMMARY:First Friday–Blockchain & Chinatown: Thoughtfully Designing Technology
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Chinatown and its collaborators are working towards bringing a digital loyalty program to Chinatown. The intention is to have a community-defined loyalty program that incentivizes more visitors to the neighborhood and equips small businesses with analytic data to further their business planning. What are the needs of the Chinatown small business owners and what do currently-existing loyalty programs fail to provide? What are the benefits of a blockchain-based loyalty system? How did they incorporate their learnings from an NFT launch into the program? This panel is moderated by Vic Lee of Welcome to Chinatown and will feature Nikhil Kumar of Solana Labs\, Creative Technologist Cy Kim\, and Justin Ng & Rhea Jiang of SPACED AGENCY.

SUMMARY:Fashioning The Self: I Am My Own Property
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Ethel Reed: I Am My Own Property highlights the artist’s masterful use of fashion and her appearance to control her own narrative and that of her work. Of course\, Reed wasn’t the only person of her time to leverage fashion to her advantage. How were Black people—whether free\, freed\, or enslaved—leveraging sartorial freedoms to construct and project new narratives? Join fashion historians Jonathan Michal Square and Elizabeth Way for an evening exploring the turn-of-the-century fashions of African Americans. Questions strongly encouraged! \nJonathan Michael Square is the Assistant Professor of Black Visual Culture at Parsons School of Design. He is also currently a fellow in the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He founded and runs the digital humanities project Fashioning the Self in Slavery and Freedom\, which explores the intersection between histories of enslavement and the fashion system. \nElizabeth Way is an Associate Curator at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Her exhibitions include Global Fashion Capitals (2015)\, Black Fashion Designers (2016)\, Fabric In Fashion (2018)\, and Head to Toe (on view now). Way’s personal research focuses on the intersection of African American culture and fashion\, and she edited the book Black Designers in American Fashion (2021).

SUMMARY:First Friday: Poetry Reading with Viento & Ms. Boogie
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is pleased to welcome viento and Ms. Boogie for an evening of poetry. Sex appeal\, independence\, and the power of femininity are at the top of her agenda as an artist—all topics readily discussed in the exhibition Ethel Reed: I Am My Own Property. Meanwhile\, viento izquierdo ugaz is a multidisciplinary artist who considers the effect of migration on the visual language of their lineage\, topics close to the many displaced artists featured in The Utopian Avant-Garde: Soviet Film Posters of the 1920s. \n\nMs.Boogie is a Afro-Latina Brooklyn based MC and activist. Sex appeal\, independence and the power of femininity are at the top of her agenda as an artist. She stands tall at the intersections of underground and Mainstream Media as a Black Trans Woman in the genre of Hip Hop. She has dedicated her artistry to building a bridge between the avant-garde and conventional gaze of Rap & Hip Hop. Her music is rooted in amplifying the narratives of Black Trans Woman\, a narrative which is often erased in Black Pop Culture. With Records like ‘Fem Queen’ and ‘Dickscipline’ she manages to not only represent her existence but also heal Black Trans Women by simply making them feel seen while simultaneously educating her audience who may not be privy to the realities she faces within her experience. In December of 2021 Ms.Boogie was featured in print for Vogue Mexico as well as being listed as a Emerging Talent in Peoples Magazine. \n\n\nviento izquierdo ugaz is a multidisciplinary artist\, cultural organizer\, art director & language justice worker based between Lima & New York. Through poetry\, photography\, thread and moving image they consider the effect of migration on the visual language of their lineage\, and how this lexicon permeates their queer & trans chosen family archive. \nThey are founder of Peru-based\, Cabritas Resistiendo\, a mutable platform which creates spaces for trans folks to resist together through learning and joy virtually and IRL. They are also co-organizer of BODYHACK\, a NY/global mutual aid happy hour for trans & non-binary people\, and co-founder of rogueTHEIF\, an upcycled denim brand/performative gesture seeking to poke holes in capitalist modes of exchange. \nviento is a consultant with Transgender Equity Consulting and a current Leslie Lohman Museum and EMERGENYC Fellow whose work has appeared in El Museo del Barrio\, A.I.R\, The Poetry Project\, Brooklyn Academy of Music\, & Lambda Literary; their first chapbook is Estoy Tristeza (No Dear\, 2018). \n\nPhoto credit: right-Andre Uncut; left- Joshua Allen.

SUMMARY:Queer History is Poster History
DESCRIPTION:From posters celebrating pride to promoting nightlife events to even combatting the AIDS crisis\, queer culture is deeply embedded in poster history. Poster House is pleased to partner with Silas Munro and Brian Johnson of Polymode for a deep dive into queer touchpoints within the medium. Explore the iconic contributions the queer community has made to the graphic design cannon and how they continue to shape poster history today. Whether advocating for queer rights or advertising the right to have a good time\, posters and queer history go hand in hand. \nSilas Munro is a partner of Polymode and is particularly interested in the often unaddressed postcolonial relationship between design and marginalized communities. His writing appears in the book\, W. E. B. Du Bois’s Data Portraits: Visualizing Black America published by Princeton Architectural Press. Munro has been a visiting critic at MICA\, RISD\, and Yale\, and is a Founding Faculty and CoChair at the MFA Program in Design at Vermont College of Fine Arts. He holds an MFA from CalArts and a BFA from RISD\, where he met Brian Johnson and began collaborating. \nBrian Johnson is a partner of Polymode where he focuses on creative direction\, design production\, writing\, and teaching. Born into a family of printers\, he is deeply invested in the production of good design without sacrificing our humanity or environment. He is a member of the Monacan Nation and holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. His most recent publication\, Queering the Grid: Reading Codes in Dan Friedman’s Teachings (with Silas Munro) has led him to his current design writing research on Friedman’s 1994 Radical Manifesto\, which will be approaching its thirty year anniversary.  \nThis program is presented by CMYK Council\, Poster House’s working advisory board of BIPOC creatives\, designers\, educators\, and museum staff. \n\n\nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. ASL interpretation is available upon request — please email access@posterhouse.org to request interpretation services. A recording of this event will be made available for all registered attendees. Questions about accessibility? Please contact Salvador Muñoz\, Public Programs Manager\, at salvador@posterhouse.org.
