SUMMARY:First Friday: COVERS—Memory Mixtape & Cover Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by COVERS BY MP3\, this playful\, hands-on workshop invites participants to create a mini CD keychain with a shareable memory playlist\, paired with a self-designed album cover. \nCOVERS BY MP3 is a multimedia community arts project that documents stories from the Korean diaspora through music\, memory\, and recreated album covers featuring participants in place of the original artists. \nIn this workshop\, participants will build a playlist of the music that has shaped their lives and collage an album cover inspired by the memories it evokes. Their design will then be transformed into a mini CD keychain that links to the playlist\, allowing their personal soundtrack to be shared at the tap of a phone. Participants are welcome to bring 1–2 photos to scan and add to their collage. \n \nPrisca Choe is a visual artist and cultural worker based in New York City and Philadelphia. Her work blends traditional Korean craft with contemporary media to explore identity\, memory\, and the stories carried across the diaspora. She is the creator and co-director of COVERS BY MP3\, a multimedia community arts project that documents migration stories through music. Through installations\, wearable art\, and community projects\, Choe creates spaces that play with the tension between preserving and transforming culture. \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs. SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Act Black
DESCRIPTION:Starting in the 1880s\, Black performers and those invested in telling stories centering Black people attempted to counter the dehumanizing and harmful stereotypes created by white people to portray Black characters. Since theatrical performances are rarely recorded and many of the movies that featured all-Black casts are now considered “lost films” (films where no copies are known to survive)\, advertising posters are sometimes the only remaining evidence of important productions made with Black talent between the 1870s and the 1940s. The posters in this exhibition provide a guide for viewers as they consider how Black storytelling was transformed during its transition from stage to screen. \nJoin curator Es-pranza Humphrey for this private\, members-only tour of Act Black: Posters from Black American Stage & Screen and learn more about the innovative efforts of Black writers\, directors\, and actors to represent Black life and experience for Black audiences. \nLight refreshments will be served. \n \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs. SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Robert Rauschenberg’s New York
DESCRIPTION:Poster House members are invited to a special tour of the acclaimed exhibition Robert Rauschenberg’s New York: Pictures from the Real World at the Museum of the City of New York. This tour will be jointly led by Isometric Studios\, the team behind the exhibition’s design\, and MCNY curator Sean Corcoran. \nRauchenberg is widely regarded as one of the most influential artists of the postwar era. His irreverent approach to art-making reshaped the art world in New York and well beyond it for an entire generation. At the heart of his practice was a desire to incorporate the tangible world around him into his art. Gathering materials and inspiration from his surroundings\, he often brought found objects and images sourced or reproduced from magazines and newspapers into his paintings and sculptures. But Rauschenberg was not merely a user of found imagery; he was also a photographer with a bold creative vision—and photography became an essential aspect of his artistic practice\, one that is the focus of this exhibition. \nThis tour takes place at the Museum of the City of New York\, 1220 Fifth Ave at 103rd St.\, New York\, NY 10029. \n \nAccessibility Note: As this is an off-site event\, masks and clear masks are available free of charge with prior notification. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon advanced request. SUMMARY:Strausfeld Cinema Series: The Connection
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Art for Art House: The Posters of Peter Strausfeld\, Poster House will present a special mini film series on March 20. Radical\, jazz-infused\, and formally daring\, Shirley Clarke’s The Connection (1961) is a groundbreaking example of American independent cinema. The film blurs the line between documentary and fiction\, capturing the raw energy and experimentation that define many of the posters created by Peter Strausfeld for avant-garde screenings at the Academy Cinema in London. \nBe sure to stop by Café des Affiches for themed drinks and snacks to accompany the movie! \nDuration: 1 hour 50 minutes \nRecommended Age: 15 and above (please note that this film includes depictions of drug use and addiction. Viewer discretion is advised). \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. SUMMARY:Strausfeld Cinema Series: Ashes and Diamonds
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Art for Art House: The Posters of Peter Strausfeld\, Poster House will present a special mini film series on March 20. One of the most influential postwar European films\, Andrzej Wajda’s Ashes and Diamonds (1958)\, unfolds during the final hours of World War II as a young Polish resistance fighter confronts loyalty\, morality\, and the cost of conflict. The film\, with its striking cinematography and emotional weight\, reflects the kind of international titles Strausfeld represented so effectively in his poster designs for London’s Academy Cinema. \nBe sure to stop by Café des Affiches for themed drinks and snacks to accompany the screening! \nDuration: 1 hour 43 minutes \nRecommended Age: 14 and older \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. SUMMARY:Strausfeld Cinema Series: An Actor’s Revenge
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Art for Art House: The Posters of Peter Strausfeld\, Poster House will present a special mini film series on March 20. A celebrated classic of Japanese cinema\, Kon Ichikawa’s An Actor’s Revenge (1963) follows a renowned kabuki performer as he seeks to avenge the deaths of his parents. This highly stylized film reflects some of the sophisticated dramatic intensity that characterizes Strausfeld’s posters. Its vivid colors\, costumes\, and performances make it the perfect movie to see before or after your visit to the exhibition—be sure to take a look at Strausfeld’s remarkable promotional poster for it while you are there. \nBe sure to stop by Café des Affiches for themed drinks and snacks to accompany the screening! \nDuration: 1 hour 53 minutes \nRecommended age: 13 and above \nAccessibility Note: Masks and clear masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs. SUMMARY:Members-Only Tour: Love & Fury
DESCRIPTION:Join curator Ian Bradley Perrin for a private\, members-only tour of Love & Fury: New York’s Fight Against AIDS. \nWhen AIDS hit New York\, posters spoke when institutions stayed silent. In a city wired for visual competition—crowded streets\, subway ads\, nightclub flyers—posters became lifelines. They helped people to find clinics\, mourn the dead\, demand justice\, and fight for the living. \nThis exhibition explores how graphic design shaped New York’s grassroots response to AIDS from 1979 to 2003. Public health campaigns\, agitprop\, benefit flyers\, and club handbills offer more than just messages—they map how communities built survival systems from below\, often before the state would act. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nThis exhibition is rated R for sexually explicit imagery and text. SUMMARY:National Parks Posters: Then & Now
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to partner with the United States International Poster Biennial (USIPB) in celebration of Blazing a Trail: Dorothy Waugh’s National Parks Posters. This year’s USIPB theme honors the rich visual legacy of the U.S. National Parks system\, inviting contemporary designers to respond to that tradition and reimagine it for the 21st century. Tonight\, join designers Christopher Scott\, Marlena Buczek Smith\, and Taber Calderon as they share how historic National Parks posters influenced their creative process—and how they approached designing new work that bridges past and present. \nChristopher Scott is the founder and president of the United States International Poster Biennial and an assistant teaching professor at Iowa State University. He is an internationally recognized\, award-winning designer from Northern Ireland who holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Design from the University of Ulster\, Magee. He has received over 300 international awards\, including honors from the WWF\, Amnesty International\, Poster For Tomorrow\, Adobe\, and Graphis—where he won three Gold awards—and a Silver from the International Design Awards. His work has been exhibited worldwide\, including at the Louvre in Paris.  \nTaber Calderon is a New York City-based graphic designer. Born in the south of the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo) and raised in the “south” South Bronx in the 1980s\, he is influenced by traditional family values and first world culture shock\, including poverty\, the crack epidemic\, crime\, and grime. Fortunately\, his grandfather and uncles worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was the best going to work with dad(s) days. On the train\, he found (or it found him) his biggest influences—the School of Visual Arts subway posters and the all mighty United Colors of Benetton ads. Art was it! His work has been recognized by international design and poster exhibitions. \nMarlena Buczek Smith is a designer and author who moved to the United States from Poland in the early ’90s\, where she attended the School of Visual Arts in NYC. Her body of work includes posters\, commercial graphic design\, and paintings. Her posters have been printed in various publications including Print Quarterly and Graphis\, the latter elevating her status to Master in the September 2023 issue. Marlena judges and/or participates in international poster exhibitions\, including the 8th International Biennale of the Socio-Political Poster\, the 14 International Triennial of Political Posters\, What Unites Us 2\, and the 2021 New Jersey Arts Annual: Revision and Respond. Her latest work\, a compilation of posters and poetry book entitled Continuum\, was released in Spring 2025.
