SUMMARY:First Friday
DESCRIPTION:Join Poster House on the First Friday of every month for free admission and extended hours! Explore the museum’s latest exhibitions and get in on the fun by attending a tour\, workshop\, or activity throughout the day.  Every First Friday is different\, offering unique opportunities to engage with rotating exhibitions and the permanent collection. \n\n1pm Peace Poster Workshop\nJoin artist and printmaker Todd Drake for this hands-on workshop centered on the theme of peace. Inspired by the work of designer and artist Peter Paul Piech\, participants will learn basic linoleum printmaking techniques while creating their very own peace posters.   \n5:30pm Ethel Reed Docent Tour\nGet an inside look at the exhibition Ethel Reed: I Am My Own Property during this informative docent tour. Learn about this pioneering graphic designer—one of a handful of American women to make a name for herself in the field at the turn of the 19th century—and explore the dark and oftentimes defiant thread that ran just beneath the surface of her otherwise cheerful compositions.  \n6:00pm Fabulous Florals Workshop\nJust in time for spring\, join artist and designer M for an interactive\, flower-based design activity. Participants in this hands-on workshop will learn to incorporate floral motifs into their analog designs. Guests will leave with a personal design inspired by the exhibition Ethel Reed: I Am My Own Property. \nNOTE: All workshop participants must show proof that they have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. \n7pm Battleship Potemkin Movie Screening\nEnjoy a screening of the renowned 1925 silent film Battleship Potemkin in the museum’s main gallery. Widely considered to be a technical masterpiece and one of the greatest movies of all time\, Battleship Potemkin continues to influence and inspire filmmakers. This unique experience offers attendees the opportunity to enjoy the acclaimed film among the film posters featured in The Utopian Avant-Garde: Soviet Film Posters of the 1920s\, on view through August 21. \n

SUMMARY:It Takes a Village: Unsung Women and Their Contributions to Silent Film
DESCRIPTION:In the first two decades of the 20th century\, the nascent silent film industry offered women numerous opportunities to make a significant impact in the field. Mostly marginalized and forgotten over time\, these women contributed heavily to early Hollywood filmmaking\, doing everything from editing to designing\,  producing to directing. While some like Alice Guy-Blaché\, Lois Weber\, and Mary Pickford are well known by cinema buffs\, many unsung pioneers like Clare West\, Elsa Lopez\, and Marion Fairfax still live in obscurity. This lecture will acknowledge these many women’s talents and provide the recognition they deserve. \nFilm historian and writer Mary Mallory is the author of four books and a blogger  on Los Angeles and early film history. She has contributed to the Women Film Pioneers Project\, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival\, and American History magazine. She has lectured at the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum\, Hollywood Heritage Museum\, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UCLA\, and she currently serves on Hollywood Heritage’s Board of Directors. \n\n\n\n\nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. Closed Captioning will be provided. ASL interpretation is available upon request with two weeks notice — please email Sarit@posterhouse.org to request interpretation services. A recording of this event will be made available for all registered attendees. Questions about accessibility? Please contact Sarit Cahana\, Access Coordinator\, at Sarit@posterhouse.org.

SUMMARY:Rips & Slices: Masked Vigilantes Artists’ Panel
DESCRIPTION:Masked Vigilantes in Silent Motorbikes highlights how posters have long been co-opted by artists to create compelling\, vibrant new works of art. Poster House is thrilled to welcome featured artists Swoon\, Galen Gibson-Cornell\, and Nicholas Fraser to a panel discussion moderated by curator RJ Rushmore on the significance of posters in their practice. Discover how these artists are inspired by posters and how they utilize the formal and conceptual elements of ad campaigns to produce new bodies of work. Each artist’s approach to the medium is unique\, making for a rich and vibrant conversation that will provide both newcomers and seasoned poster enthusiasts with a fresh perspective on the dynamism of posters. Questions strongly encouraged! \nCaledonia Curry\, known as Swoon\, is a contemporary artist and filmmaker recognized around the world for her pioneering vision of public artwork. She has spent over 20 years exploring the depths of human complexity by mobilizing her artwork to fundamentally re-envision the communities we live in toward a more just and equitable world.  \nGalen Gibson-Cornell is a visual artist working with a practice that combines urban exploration\, repurpose of found-materials\, and principles of détournement. He studies the layers of “urban skin” in cities—the posters\, flyers\, and paper advertisements—before returning to his Philadelphia studio to deconstruct the resulting materials into methodical and meditative artworks. \nNicholas Fraser creates installations\, videos\, and sculptures that grapple with the mutability of texts\, exploring our compulsion to communicate and mining the gap between intention and perception. \nRJ Rushmore is a writer\, curator\, and public art advocate who builds projects that disrupt visual culture. He is a cofounder of Art in Ad Places\, a guerrilla public art campaign across New York City’s former payphones\, and he has curated projects for The L.I.S.A.
