The communities that surround this complex ecosystem have helped construct it\, and in return benefit from it\, with endless opportunities for work\, education\, and recreation. The harbor is a world-class public space\, well used and well cared for—our Commons. Billion Oyster Project hopes to restore one billion oysters by the year 2035 through public education initiatives working to involve one million people! Learn about our work and how to get involved. \n4pm We Tried to Warn You Curatorial Tour\nJoin Poster House Guest Curator Tim Medland for a drop-in tour of We Tried to Warn You: Environmental Crisis Posters\, 1970–2020. Explore the global history of environmental activism through graphic design. Questions are strongly encouraged! \n5pm Alt Text as Poetry Workshop\nPosters are a visual medium. How can they be made more accessible to the blind and low vision community? Poster House is thrilled to welcome Finnegan Shannon (they/them) and Bojana Coklyat (she/her) as they lead visitors through a workshop on how to reframe alt text (short\, written descriptions of images) as a type of poetry. Inspired by posters from the museum’s collection\, visitors will practice writing\, discussing\, and reframing this type of accessible writing. To learn more about this larger project\, visit the Alt Text as Poetry website. \n\n\n\nAccessibility Notes:\nAn ASL interpreter and assistive listening devices will be provided. Seating will include stools and chairs. No previous experience required. \n7pm Gatsby Entertainment Dance Performance\nCelebrate Art Deco: Commercializing the Avant-Garde with a performance by Gatsby Entertainment\, New York’s premiere Jazz-Age dance troupe. Enjoy the hottest dances of the 1920s performed by expert dancers in full period costume.

DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to offer its Members a curatorial tour of the celebrated exhibition Art for the Millions: American Culture & Politics in the 1930s. Currently on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, this exhibition uses over 100 posters\, prints\, paintings\, textiles\, sculpture\, and other objects and ephemera to tell the complex story of the United States during this tumultuous time. Americans searched for their cultural identity during the Great Depression\, a period marked by divisive politics\, threats to democracy\, and intensified social activism\, including a powerful labor movement. This is a not-to-be-missed event! \nThis tour will be held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, located at 1000 5th Ave\, New York\, NY 10028.

DESCRIPTION:In honor of our celebrated exhibition We Tried to Warn You! Environmental Crisis Posters\, 1970–2020\, Poster House Members are invited to an after-hours\, private tour of the Climate Museum’s latest show\, The End of Fossil Fuel. This new exhibition explores the fossil fuel industry’s history of racism and deception\, and spotlights the success of the environmental and climate justice movement in resisting and reversing the industry’s harms. It includes a 45-foot-long mural by the award-winning artist and illustrator R. Gregory Christie envisioning the struggle for a climate-safe and just world\, as well as multiple opportunities for visitors to take action in community. \nThis tour takes place at the Climate Museum\, located at 105 Wooster Street\, New York\, NY\, 10012.

SUMMARY:Fused Plastic Collage Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered what you can create with discarded plastics? Presented in conjunction with the exhibition We Tried to Warn You! Environmental Crisis Posters\, 1920-2020\, this hands-on workshop will introduce participants to the technique of fusing or layering plastics using an iron. Participants will explore the material affordances of various types of biodegradable\, recyclable\, and single-use plastics in order to create fused plastic collages inspired by posters on environmental activism. Join us in this imaginative intervention into the life cycle of plastics! \nWe encourage attendees to bring a piece of plastic to this workshop (flexible ones such as bags\, mailers\, or food packaging work best; they can be biodegradable\, recyclable\, or single-use). All materials and tools provided; no previous experience necessary. \nFan Kong (she/her) is a researcher and teaching artist rooted in Queens\, New York City. Born in China but raised in Hong Kong\, Fan works to build safe and inclusive spaces where youth and families can practice social change-making through the arts\, especially across languages and generations. She is the founder of Craft Services (follow her on Instagram @fakefankong)\, creating educational products inspired by everyday art\, science\, and technology. Kong received her B.A. in Art History from Columbia University and M.Ed. in Learning Sciences and Human Development from the University of Washington.  \nAccessibility Note: This program is presented in person at Poster House. We’ll discuss how these beautiful posters were made. Afterward\, we’ll try printing our own images using foam plates.  \nJoin Poster House on select Sunday mornings from 10:30am–12pm for a family-friendly\, interactive poster tour and a related art-making experience. These tours are led by our Chief Curator or Educators\, allowing you intimate access to the items in our current shows and permanent collection. \nThis month’s tour will focus on the new exhibition\, We Tried to Warn You!
