SUMMARY:ASL Night: Monoprint Mixed Media Workshop with Youmee Lee
DESCRIPTION:Learn to create monoprints with various media using brayers\, brushes\, stencils\, and paint sticks! We will make monoprints by painting designs on plexiglass before printing them on paper and applying collage and image transfers. This workshop\, centered on social justice\, is intended to be playful and fun\, encouraging participants to express themselves boldly! \nYoumee Lee is a deaf animator and certified Teacher of the Deaf based in New York City. Youmee served as the artist-in-residence at the New York School for the Deaf\, teaching art to deaf and hard-of-hearing students. After completing her teaching residency\, she returned to school to pursue an MA in Deaf Education at Teachers College at Columbia University. Youmee has also advocated for the visibility of deaf representation in literature\, writing and illustrated children’s books about an Asian American family that feature deaf characters\, published by Gallaudet University Press. Youmee strives to empower deaf children and adults to express themselves and develop their understanding of and appreciation for storytelling. Youmee Lee earned an MFA in Film and Animation from Rochester Institute of Technology and an MA in Deaf Education from Teachers College\, Columbia University. She is currently pursuing her visual arts teacher certificate through Pratt Institute’s Art and Design Education program. \nPlease note: this workshop will be led in American Sign Language (ASL). While this event is primarily offered for members of the signing community\, everyone is welcome\, space permitting. DESCRIPTION:This one-hour workshop invites students to transform one of Italy’s most beloved cultural icons—pasta—into a source of visual inspiration. Each participant will choose a shape of pasta to work with and let its form\, texture\, and name spark ideas for a unique poster design. \nThrough hands-on experimentation with collage—using inks\, magazine cut-outs\, and colored paper—students will translate culinary shapes into bold graphic compositions. From the spirals of fusilli to the butterflies of farfalle\, here pasta becomes more than food: it becomes a visual language. \nBy the end of the session\, participants will have created an original poster that connects everyday Italian culture to personal creativity. The exercise celebrates pasta as a design catalyst—simple\, familiar\, and endlessly versatile. \nLorenzo Fanton (@lorenzofanton) is an Italian graphic designer\, art director\, and type designer based in New York City. With a practice spanning brand identity\, editorial\, and digital design\, he is recognized for translating complex ideas into clear\, type-driven systems and elegant visual narratives. His international experience—shaped at such studios as Pentagram\, Collins\, Ogilvy & Mather\, The Partners\, Siegel+Gale\, The Glue Society\, and Fabrica—has led to collaborations with Ferrari\, Taschen\, Netflix\, AGBO\, NBC\, Warner Records\, Riot Games\, and Polyvinyl\, among others. Awarded by the Type Directors Club\, SPD\, and ADC\, Lorenzo continues to balance research and intuition in building concept-driven work. \nGiulia Zoavo (@giuliazoavo) is an Italian-born multidisciplinary designer and visual artist based in New York City who tells complex stories with simple shapes—and sometimes with words too. She has collaborated with a wide range of clients and agencies\, including Sagmeister & Walsh\, BBDO\, AHOY Studios\, the New York Times\, and Rizzoli. Giulia is one of the cofounders of Salotto\, a hub for cultural research and production led by Italian creative professionals in Brooklyn. Her work has been recognized by American Illustration\, 3×3 Magazine\, The One Club for Creativity\, Illustri Festival in Vicenza\, and PRINT Magazine. This tour is an adventure\, encouraging you to lose yourself in Dorothy Waugh’s vision of America. \nZipeng Zhu is a Chinese-born artist\, designer\, educator\, and founder of the award-winning creative studio DAZZLE in New York City. He wants to make every day a razzle-dazzle musical. He has collaborated with iconic brands such as Apple\, Adidas\, Adobe\, Coca-Cola\, Instagram\, Microsoft\, Netflix\, the New York Times\, the New Yorker Magazine\, Uber\, MTV\, and Samsung. Together\, they’ll explore how scientists and advocates work to prevent the spread and use of nuclear weapons—and how artistic voices like Anderson’s have shaped the cultural imagination around disarmament.  \nDrawing from Anderson’s seminal 1982 album Big Science\, the conversation will explore how that work anticipated many of the tensions of the nuclear age and continues to resonate in today’s disarmament discourse. Moderated by Sing For Science host Matt Whyte\, this intimate conversation invites guests to consider how creative and scientific communities can work together in pursuit of peace. \nDoors open at 6:30pm. There is no reserved seating. Refreshments will be available to purchase before and after the event.  \nLaurie Anderson is a trailblazing American avant-garde artist\, composer\, and performance pioneer whose creativity bridges music\, visual art\, film\, and technology.Trained in classical violin from age five\, she later shifted her focus to art and performance\, earning a B.A. from Barnard (1969) and an M.F.A. from Columbia (1972). Anderson emerged in the 1970s NYC art scene with daring\, language- and tech-driven works. Her 1981 hit single “O Superman” reached No. 2 in the UK in 1981 and launched her recording career with the acclaimed album Big Science  Over her five-decade career\, she’s released multimedia shows (United States I–V\, Songs and Stories for Moby Dick)\, feature-film soundtracks (including Home of the Brave\, Life on a String)\, authored books\, and created installations showcased in major museums worldwide. \nZia Mian is an award-winning physicist and co-director of Princeton University’s Program on Science and Global Security\, where he has worked since 1997. His research includes the science\, policy\, and politics of nuclear disarmament\, arms control\, and nonproliferation. Mian helped found and co-chairs the Scientific Advisory Group of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and previously served on the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters. He is a co-founder and leader of the Physicists Coalition for Nuclear Threat Reduction and is on the Board of the Union of Concerned Scientists. Mian received the 2014 Linus Pauling Legacy Award\, the 2019 Leo Szilard Award\, and in 2021 was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society for his contributions to nuclear disarmament. \nSing for Science is an award-winning\, top 10 music interview podcast on Apple Podcasts that features musicians exploring scientific topics in conversation with experts. Past episodes have featured Korn front man Jonathan Davis and author Mary Roach discussing mortuary science; Sia and sex therapist Alex Katehakis on attachment theory; and Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo with Python creator Guido van Rossum on coding—among many others that connect science-curious music fans to thought-provoking topics. The show is hosted by New York musician Matt Whyte\, whose credits include composing for Netflix’s Tiger King and Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened\, as well as fronting the mid-aughts band Earl Greyhound. Inspired by performing in a Pete Seeger memorial concert at Joe’s Pub in New York City\, Matt created the podcast to continue Seeger’s legacy of using music to engage with the world’s most pressing issues. SUMMARY:West Side Fest: Stamp & Stencil Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Stamps and stencils are versatile tools for creating images\, offering a variety of textures and layering effects also found in printmaking. They can be used to form patterns\, motifs\, and typography\, resulting in striking compositions. \nIn this workshop\, participants will not only learn how to use these tools to produce eye-catching graphic images\, but also how to create custom stamps and stencils from materials like cut paper\, potatoes\, sponges\, bubble wrap\, erasers\, lace\, flowers\, netting\, and other easily found supplies. Lear how to achieve remarkable shapes and texture by experimenting with ordinary objects in exciting new ways.  \nThis is a drop-in friendly workshop for all ages—stop by for a few minutes or stay for the full hour! Try your hand at linoleum-block printing and make stickers inspired by West Side Fest and the museum’s current exhibitions.  \nMikey Quackenboss is a self-taught printmaker and classically trained tattoo artist working in Brooklyn.
