DESCRIPTION:This special in-person accessibility tour will focus on the exhibition Puerto Rico in Print: The Posters of Lorenzo Homar. Led by Lead Educator and Accessibility Coordinator Jes Hughes\, this tour will include a vibrant verbal description of 6 posters as well as the history associated with them\, and will allow guests to experience the posters up close. The tour will be enhanced with touch objects of items used in the silkscreen poster printing process. From bomba and plena to contemporary Caribbean beats\, this channel echoes Lorenzo Homar’s call for cultural pride and liberation. \nChannel 2: Fallout\nAn ambient\, cinematic mix evoking the Cold War era—nuclear tension\, utopian dreams\, and atomic design. Expect eerie synths\, archival recordings\, and sonic meditations on fear and power. \nChannel 3: Copy/Paste/Print/Repeat\nA tapestry of iconic sounds featuring the rock\, punk\, and pop legends of yesterday and today. SUMMARY:West Side Fest: How to Create A Poster Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to design a poster in this special hands-on workshop with designer and printer Nicholas Hurd. Participants will look closely at two of the museum’s current exhibitions\, Puerto Rico in Print: Lorenzo Homer and Fallout: Atoms for War & Peace\, for ideas about how to create a successful poster design. Using collage\, stencils\, stamps\, and pens\, attendees will sketch ideas for posters focusing on the relationship between image and type\, and consider text hierarchies\, composition\, color schemes\, and effective ways of drawing the viewer’s attention to a message. No previous experience necessary. \nNicholas Hurd is a designer and printer at Radix Printing and Publishing Cooperative in Brooklyn\, New York. He began his artistic career designing flyers for punk shows in the Bay Area and spent many years working in print shops as a letterpress printer. He has a BFA in Printmaking from San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from California College of the Arts. Hurd is also an alumnus of the Hatch Show Print internship program. DESCRIPTION:Peter Max’s colorful\, psychedelic designs with motifs drawn from Art Nouveau and Eastern painting traditions are hallmarks of the visual identity of the 1960s. Max created commissions and advertisements for a wide range of clients\, from the Woodstock Music Festival (Summer of Love) to bedsheets to clocks for General Electric (GE)\, the latter of which act as inspiration for this event. \nHeld on a First Friday\, access to the museum is free\, and we encourage you to come early and browse the Shop\, enjoy our exhibitions\, and order treats from the Café. \nThis event is capped at 25 guests. SUMMARY:PH x College: Intro to Inclusive Design in Museums
DESCRIPTION:How are museums morally and ethically obligated to ensure their spaces are accessible to all? And are they delivering on that obligation and including disabled individuals in such conversations? Join Poster House and artist\, educator\, and disability rights activist Oaklee Thiele in discussing the issue of museum accessibility and various measures cultural institutions can take to ensure all individuals are guaranteed the right to intellectually and physically engage with their texts and publications. \nThe workshop will include a breakout room session where attendees will be given a scenario that requires accessibility intervention. Attendees will then devise a solution to the problem using the tools and information provided in the talk\, and have the opportunity to give a three-minute presentation on their ideas to the larger group.  \nPoster House is a new museum that opened its doors in 2019. Although we do not yet have an exhaustive range of accessibility options\, this program is part of our effort toward more equitable spaces. SUMMARY:Genius on Display: Expanding Access with Cheryl Miller
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to welcome 2021 AIGA Award Medalist Cheryl D. Miller for an evening highlighting unsung Black and racialized designers of the 1960s and ‘70s. Set against the backdrop of our current exhibitions\, Miller’s talk will focus on the talented yet overlooked BIPOC designers of this era and the hurdles and systems that kept them out of the industry. Applying her signature decolonializing lens\, Miller will amplify the expertise and artistry of these designers and assert their rightful place in the design cannon. In this intimate conversation\, Miller will ground her analysis in her own lived experience\, sharing her personal history as a young designer of color who lived through the time period in New York City. \n Cheryl Miller is recognized for her outsized influence within the profession to end the marginalization of BIPOC designers through her civil rights activism\, industry exposé trade writing\, research rigor\, and archival vision. Miller is a national leader of Minority Rights\, Gender\, Race Diversity\, Equality\, Equity\, and Inclusion advocacy in Graphic Design. \nShe is founder of then\, Cheryl D. Miller Design\, Inc.\, N.Y.C.\, a Social Impact Design firm; she is a designer\, author\, trade writer for PRINT Magazine\, and theologian. The Cheryl D. Miller Collection at Stanford University is her legacy professional firm’s archive\, including her memoir research and manuscripts. The collection features D&I initiative\, Corporate Communications developed for Fortune 500 corporations\, and Corporate Communications for National African American organizations developed post Civil Rights Era\, 1974–1994. She is Distinguished Senior Lecturer\, University of Texas\, Austin Design. She is a member of The Board of Trustees\, Vermont College of Fine Arts and The President’s Global Advisory Board\, Maryland Institute College of Art. \n\nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. DESCRIPTION:Blaxploitation is often harshly critiqued as a cinematic genre for its negative representations of Blackness by relying on stereotypes\, the hypersexualization of women\, and ridiculous caricatures. In the 1970s\, however\, Blaxploitation saved many Hollywood studios from the brink of bankruptcy while breaking barriers for Black representation in mainstream media. Join curator Adam Howard in conversation with author Josiah Howard (no relation) as the pair discuss Blaxploitation with the nuance and complexity the topic deserves. Together they’ll explore both the good and the bad of the genre and discuss its lasting impact on contemporary film culture. \nAdam Howard is a Senior Associate Producer at the Full Frontal with Samantha Bee show. He is also a co-creator and Executive Producer of the Full Release with Samantha Bee podcast. Prior to his career in late night comedy\, he spent several years as a journalist\, writing about pop culture and politics for The Daily Beast\, Playboy\, NBC News\, and The Nation. He is a graduate of Columbia University’s School of Journalism and studied film history and screenwriting at Bard College. In his spare time\, he illustrates his own alternative movie posters and resides in Brooklyn\, N.Y. with his wife Elizabeth Rosado and their dog Cookie. \nJosiah Howard is a senior contributor at The Deuce and Furious Cinema and is the author of Blaxploitation Cinema: the Essential Reference Guide.
