SUMMARY:Genius on Display: Expanding Access with Cheryl Miller
DESCRIPTION:Poster House is thrilled to welcome 2021 AIGA Award Medalist Cheryl D. Miller for an evening highlighting unsung Black and racialized designers of the 1960s and ‘70s. Set against the backdrop of our current exhibitions\, Miller’s talk will focus on the talented yet overlooked BIPOC designers of this era and the hurdles and systems that kept them out of the industry. Applying her signature decolonializing lens\, Miller will amplify the expertise and artistry of these designers and assert their rightful place in the design cannon. In this intimate conversation\, Miller will ground her analysis in her own lived experience\, sharing her personal history as a young designer of color who lived through the time period in New York City. \n Cheryl Miller is recognized for her outsized influence within the profession to end the marginalization of BIPOC designers through her civil rights activism\, industry exposé trade writing\, research rigor\, and archival vision. Miller is a national leader of Minority Rights\, Gender\, Race Diversity\, Equality\, Equity\, and Inclusion advocacy in Graphic Design. \nShe is founder of then\, Cheryl D. Miller Design\, Inc.\, N.Y.C.\, a Social Impact Design firm; she is a designer\, author\, trade writer for PRINT Magazine\, and theologian. The Cheryl D. Miller Collection at Stanford University is her legacy professional firm’s archive\, including her memoir research and manuscripts. The collection features D&I initiative\, Corporate Communications developed for Fortune 500 corporations\, and Corporate Communications for National African American organizations developed post Civil Rights Era\, 1974–1994. She is Distinguished Senior Lecturer\, University of Texas\, Austin Design. She is a member of The Board of Trustees\, Vermont College of Fine Arts and The President’s Global Advisory Board\, Maryland Institute College of Art. \n\nThis online event will be hosted on Zoom with attendees cameras off. SUMMARY:Pushing the Envelope: An Evening With Push Pin Legends
DESCRIPTION:By the mid 1960s\, Push Pin Studios had established itself as a disruptor in the design and advertising industries. Its eclectic graphic style and rejection of modern minimalism set the group apart from other agencies\, cementing its place in design history. Over the past 60 years\, nearly 100 designers\, illustrators\, artists\, and support staff have passed through the studio\, many legends in their own right. Poster House is thrilled to welcome four distinguished alumni of Push Pin\, all legends in their own right\, for an evening of conversation about the iconic studio and its many contributions to shaping modern design. Get the behind-the-scenes scoop on the inner workings of Push Pin and hear what made it so impactful straight from the mouths of those who helped build its incredible reputation. Featured speakers will be Seymour Chwast\, Myrna Davis\, Paul Davis\, and Jim McMullan\, moderated by Phyllis Feder (aka Flood). \nThis event is in person at Poster House\, and a recording will be made available on our vimeo page for our virtual audience. SUMMARY:At the Grindhouse with Adam Howard and Josiah Howard
DESCRIPTION:Blaxploitation is often harshly critiqued as a cinematic genre for its negative representations of Blackness by relying on stereotypes\, the hypersexualization of women\, and ridiculous caricatures. In the 1970s\, however\, Blaxploitation saved many Hollywood studios from the brink of bankruptcy while breaking barriers for Black representation in mainstream media. Join curator Adam Howard in conversation with author Josiah Howard (no relation) as the pair discuss Blaxploitation with the nuance and complexity the topic deserves. Together they’ll explore both the good and the bad of the genre and discuss its lasting impact on contemporary film culture. \nAdam Howard is a Senior Associate Producer at the Full Frontal with Samantha Bee show. He is also a co-creator and Executive Producer of the Full Release with Samantha Bee podcast. Prior to his career in late night comedy\, he spent several years as a journalist\, writing about pop culture and politics for The Daily Beast\, Playboy\, NBC News\, and The Nation. He is a graduate of Columbia University’s School of Journalism and studied film history and screenwriting at Bard College. In his spare time\, he illustrates his own alternative movie posters and resides in Brooklyn\, N.Y. with his wife Elizabeth Rosado and their dog Cookie. \nJosiah Howard is a senior contributor at The Deuce and Furious Cinema and is the author of Blaxploitation Cinema: the Essential Reference Guide. His writing credits include articles for the American Library of Congress\, the New York Times and Reader’s Digest. \nThis event is in person at Poster House\, and a recording will be made available on our vimeo page for our virtual audience.
