During this workshop, you’ll use the tools of letterpress printing and hand-type composition to explore boundary-pushing typographic techniques with Swiss typographer and print wizard Dafi Kühne. You’ll be guided in methods of setting type and words on a page using innovative and non-traditional processes. Attendees will leave with prints they have made themselves as well as new ways of thinking about typography, which can then be applied to their digital design practices.
Dafi Kühne ( born 1982) is a graphic designer and letterpress printmaker. He studied Visual Communication at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and holds a Research Masters Degree in Typeface Design from the University of Reading, England. Since 2009, he has been working full-time in his studio babyinktwice.ch in the Swiss Alps. Kühne uses a combination of analog and digital tools to create posters for music, art, architecture, theater, and film projects as well as for consumer products. He is guided by one central restriction: “No digital PDF ever leaves the studio as a final product.” Dafi Kühne prints all his posters using analog letterpress printing presses.
This program will take place at The Arm, located at 281 N 7th St Unit 3, Brooklyn, NY 11211. Meeting instruction will be sent after RSVPing.
