Join Poster House on the First Friday of every month for free admission and extended hours! Museum Members can check in at the Info Desk to receive one free drink ticket to use at the bar from 6 – 9 PM. Explore the museum’s latest exhibitions and get in on the fun by attending a tour, workshop, performance, or activity throughout the day. Every First Friday is different, offering unique opportunities to engage with rotating exhibitions and the permanent collection.
1-7pm: Drop-In Tote Bag Screenprinting with The Arm – $15
Stop by the Poster History Timeline between 1-7pm to try your hand at screenprinting with The Arm letterpress print shop! Visitors will have the opportunity to screenprint an Interplanetary Funk-themed design on a provided tote bag.
1-7pm: Drop-in Lino-Block Printing
Try your hand at lino-block printing! Stop by the Poster History Timeline between 1-7pm and pull your very own print inspired by the acclaimed exhibition Leaving the Smoke Behind: Enjoying an Awayday. No experience necessary!
1-2pm: Introductory Cyanotype Workshop – $20
Poster House is pleased to welcome artist and printmaking expert Misa Chhan for an introduction to Cyanotype printing. Known for their brilliant blue hues, cyanotypes are a photosensitive printing process that utilizes UV light to transfer images. Learn the basics of this historic form of printmaking as well as techniques for shifting tones from blue to brown. No previous experience required.
Misa Chhan is a Los Angeles-based artist who works with natural dyes, textiles, printmaking, and artist’s books. Her background in book arts, papermaking, and natural fibers led her to explore natural dyes and fibers as a medium to engage with and learn from the natural world. Through her art practice, Chhan aims to create a container of pure joy to demonstrate our fundamental interdependency with nature, thereby challenging the extractive mindset of domination.
4pm: Hand-Lettering Workshop – $15
Join designer, educator, and CMYK member David Jon Walker for a fun and interactive hand-lettering workshop inspired by the bold typefaces and lettering in Lester Beall and A New American Identity. Learn the basics of hand lettering and how to employ them in your own designs in this special workshop. No previous experience necessary–-all skill levels welcome!
5:30pm: Space Jam 2: A New Legacy Movie Screening
Everybody get back up, it’s time to slam…again! Poster House is pleased to screen the 2021 sequel Space Jam 2: A New Legacy, in conjunction with the museum’s acclaimed exhibition Just Frame It! How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes. Don’t miss what one critic has called “a chaotic, rainbow sprinkle-colored nonsense that, unlike the original, manages to hold together as a movie.”
7-8:30pm: Interplanetary Funk Drag Show
Take a funky interplanetary journey to the planet Lovetron! This intergalactic drag show is inspired by Darryl “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins, who is prominently featured in the acclaimed exhibition Just Frame It! How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes. Fire up your atomic phasers and strap in your anti-gravity boots, because we’re blasting off at the speed of light and anything can happen on this interstellar journey! Featuring performances by Junior Mintt, Maljo Blu, Issa Big Dragon, and Dev Doee!
