Don’t miss an electrifying evening of live jazz music and tap dancing with the Jerome Jennings Trio and Maurice Chestnut. Presented in connection with Act Black: Posters from Black American Stage & Screen, this program celebrates two Black American performance traditions as Chestnut uses his feet as another instrument, responding to the trio through rhythm, movement, and improvisation. Together, the musicians and Chestnut will create a performance filled with energy, spontaneity, and swing.
About the Performers
Jerome Jennings is an Emmy Award-winning composer, drummer, bandleader, and educator. His debut album, The Beast, was named one of NPR’s top jazz releases and received a four-star review from DownBeat, while his second album, Solidarity, was recognized by NPR among the best music that spoke truth to power in 2019. He has performed and recorded with artists including Sonny Rollins, Ron Carter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Christian McBride, and Wynton Marsalis. Jennings teaches jazz drums at Princeton University and graduate jazz history at Montclair State University.
Maurice Chestnut is a Newark, New Jersey-based tap dancer, choreographer, and musician who began performing professionally at age nine. He later joined the national tour of Bring in ’Da Noise, Bring in ’Da Funk and has continued to perform with tap master Savion Glover in productions including Bare Soundz and Classical Savion. Chestnut has appeared at Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theater, Birdland, and major jazz festivals around the world.
