First Friday: Moving Pictures Waterfall Card Workshop with Kelli Anderson

Join us for a hands-on paper engineering workshop led by artist and designer Kelli Anderson and presented in connection with Act Black: Posters from Black American Stage & Screen. Participants will transform flat sheets of paper into waterfall cards that work like tiny handheld films. Each participant will sketch a simple narrative and build it across approximately 15 frames. The group will then fold and assemble the cards while learning about the history and development of this early form of paper animation. By the end of the workshop, everyone will leave with a moving story of their own!
All materials will be provided, and no prior design experience is necessary.
About the instructor
Kelli Anderson uses design magic to connect people with the depth and possibility of the world. She created This Book is a Camera (MoMA), which transforms into a working camera, and This Book is a Planetarium (Chronicle), which has sold more than 100,000 copies. Her book Alphabet in Motion about typography and technology was published to wide acclaim in the fall of 2025. Her clients include NPR, The New Yorker, the Guggenheim, MoMA, Apple, and The New York Times. She has been nominated for the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Award twice. She teaches at NYU and Cooper Union.
