This month for Poster Kids, Poster House is partnering with Materials for the Arts to lead families in a costume workshop inspired by the glitzy dresses and sharp suits of Black American vaudeville and revues, as highlighted in Act Black: Posters from Black American Stage & Screen. Craft a banana skirt à la Josephine Baker or a dandy three-piece from the reusable treasures found in MFTA’s warehouse. Embellish your work with colorful fabric, buttons, and ribbons, then strut your stuff to the music of Tin Pan Alley!

Materials for the Arts is New York City’s premier re-use facility, saving millions of dollars worth of materials from the waste stream and re-donating them to artists, schools, and non-profit arts organizations across New York City to support their practice. Materials for the Arts advocates for creative re-use through education programs, artist residencies, art shows, and community events that celebrate making art with the free sustainably re-usable materials around us.

This program invites children 5–11 years old and their adults to collaborate (siblings are welcome). This is not a drop-off program.

The education team reserves five tickets for each Poster Kids event for families who cannot pay the fee. Please reach out to emma@posterhouse.org for further details.

Refunds are not available for this program.

Accessibility Note: Masks are available free of charge at the museum. Assistive listening devices and stools are available. ASL (American Sign Language) interpretation or a CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation) is also available upon request. Please contact access@posterhouse.org or (914) 295-2387 to request interpretation services and to address any other accessibility needs.
