Calls to action from within the independent gay press were a crucial part of the response to the AIDS crisis. While mainstream publications either ignored the issue or spread fear and misinformation, a parallel world of queer-focused newspapers, magazines, and zines shared alternative perspectives, disseminated insider information, and demanded public response.

Join Poster House for an evening with designer and zine publisher Dan Rhatigan, who will look at the variety of titles that tackled the AIDS crisis, sharing images and some physical copies from his personal archive of queer zines and periodicals. With a visual language that ranged from the somber to the subversive (and often graphic), the gay community and its many subcultures worked to get the word out—and make those words stand out within the media landscape.

Doors open at 6:15pm.

Dan Rhatigan researches the design and typography of the early decades of gay periodicals. He grew up in New York City and now publishes zines and typefaces from his home in Portland, Oregon (where he has more room for his ever-growing collection of vintage magazines). To learn more about his work, visit Bijou Type or Pink Mince.
