Sustainability Statement
Poster House prides itself as being a responsible and conscientious member of the museum community, and holds itself to a high standard of sustainability and environmental awareness. We are committed to reducing our negative impact on the environment whenever possible, and seek creative solutions to reaching those goals. We are a member of the Gallery Climate Coalition and leadership staff are pursuing LEED credentials.
Current practices in our operations, exhibitions, and programs include:
- HVAC units are operated through a high-efficiency Building Management System that actively reduces our carbon footprint.
- In accordance with the Bizot Green Protocols, the museum determines appropriate levels of risk management and energy intensive parameters for relative humidity and climate control on a case by case basis, resulting in lower energy loads on climate mitigation.
- All deinstalled exhibition materials including walls, support structures, acrylic sheets, and graphic vinyl are retained for reuse in future fabrication projects.
- Exhibition materials that Poster House does not reuse, including frames and furniture, are donated to Materials for the Arts.
- When possible, supplies for educational projects and public programs are acquired through Materials for the Arts.
- Motion-activated lighting systems reduce power consumption. Lights and digital displays are also disabled throughout the building during closed hours.
- Being a digital-first institution by not printing materials unless absolutely necessary. This includes admission tickets, exhibition guides, and any other single-use items, as well as administrative documents.
- Incorporating recycled and discontinued paper into our exhibition handouts.
- Incorporating waste paper and other used items into our educational arts and crafts workshops.
- Composting organic waste from both staff and our Café.
- All utensils, plates, and serving ware in our Café are compostable, recyclable, or reusable.
- Opting for local pickup and delivery by foot of artwork, supplies, and other materials whenever possible.
- All disused tech and batteries are recycled at Department of Sanitation SAFE and E-Waste sites or repurposed through buyback programs.
Every institution can always improve, and we aim to update this list as we meet our goals and find new ways to be more sustainable.
