Join Poster House on the First Friday of every month for free admission and extended hours! Explore the museum’s latest exhibitions and get in on the fun by attending a tour, workshop, performance, or activity throughout the day. Every First Friday is different, offering unique opportunities to engage with rotating exhibitions and the permanent collection–check back soon for a complete list of activities.
1–7pm: Woodblock Printing Demonstration – $10
Stop by the Poster History Timeline to try your hand at woodblock printing! Select from one of three designs made by teaching artist Sato Yamomoto and inspired by Poster House’s new exhibition Just Frame It! How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes.
Sato Yamomoto is a bilingual Japanese artist inspired by diverse cultural sources. Born in Meguro, Tokyo, and currently living in Westchester, New York, her unique style of art includes the use of advanced ambidextrous and ukiyo-e printmaking skills.
2:30–4pm: Inclusive HIIT Workout Class with Haven Boxing Gym – $10
Poster House is pleased to partner with Haven Boxing Gym for a radically inclusive HIIT workout class! Join the instructors in the main gallery and learn basic boxing techniques among the sports heroes featured in Just Frame It! How Nike Turned Sports Stars into Superheroes. No previous experience is necessary–all experience and fitness levels are welcome!
3:30–5:30pm: Attica 2021 Documentary Screening – Free
Join Poster House for a screening of the documentary Attica (2021) by Stanley Nelson and Traci Curry. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition No Escape: The Legacy of Attica Lives!, this absorbing film sheds new light on the extreme violence of the prison industrial complex 50 years after the Attica uprisings.
6–7pm: Pattern-Making Workshop with Zipeng Zhu – $15
Join design icon and pattern-maker extraordinaire Zipeng Zhu for a hands-on pattern workshop! In this fun and engaging program, participants will use analog techniques to explore exciting color combinations and patterns inspired by Poster House’s new exhibition Fantastical Streets: The Theatrical Posters of Boris Bucan. Supplies will be provided and no preparation is necessary—just bring your imagination and curiosity!
7–8pm: A Study in Why We Move
New York-based dancer and choreographer Shira Kagan-Shafman and composer and violinist Leandria Lott come together again to share a new work exploring the question “why do we move?” Drawing from their ongoing collaborations between music and dance, both artists also provoke a desire to understand the question “what in you moves me?” Their work seeks to provide answers by highlighting the trust needed to move: trust in the body, in the witnesses, and in each other.
