2–3pm: Fabric Collage Workshop
Join artist Mahdiyyah for a collage-poster workshop using upcycled textiles and inspired by the vibrant, theatrical works of Boris Bućan. Drawing on Bućan’s celebrated, large-format posters for the Croatian National Theatre, you’ll explore how color, form, and symbolism can convey powerful messages. With repurposed fabric scraps and materials, you’ll learn how to create a unique, fabric-based poster while reflecting on Bućan’s incorporation of African motifs, including masks and cultural references, in his designs. In this hands-on, guided process, participants will try out a range of textile manipulation, patchwork, and collage techniques. Take home a one-of-a-kind textile piece that honors both artistic heritage and sustainable practice.
3–4pm: Lester Beall Curatorial Tour
Join us for a curatorial tour of the acclaimed exhibition Lester Beall & A New American Identity, the first to display all three of the poster series that Beall created for the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) over a five-year span during the New Deal era. In these groundbreaking posters, he merged avant-garde influences with clear, powerful messaging. Questions strongly encouraged!
4–5pm: Mixed Media Portrait Workshop
Join us this Black History Month to celebrate creativity and storytelling through art. Honor someone special in your life by creating a meaningful mixed-media portrait that captures their essence using simple materials. Bring an image to use as a reference or to incorporate into your portrait for a personal touch.
