First Friday: Intro to Letterpress with Jes Hughes

Join printer and Poster House educator Jes Hughes for an afternoon learning about wood type and leave with your own letterpress poster! Inspired by the letterpress posters in our current exhibitions, participants will learn a brief history of printing along with the basics of typesetting with real wood type. Everyone will have the chance to compose their own design and print their composition on a Provisional Press.

No prior experience required. This workshop is suitable for ages 16 and up.

Jes Hughes is an artist and educator in New York with a background in fine art printmaking and a focus in letterpress printing. She has a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and an MFA from Pratt Institute. She has previously worked at The Cooper Union School of Art and in numerous printshops and collaborative studios. Her dedication to the craft has taken her across Europe to study the history of printing and participate in international artist workshops. Currently, she holds the title of Educator, Youth Initiatives and Accessibility at Poster House.
