First Friday

Join Poster House on the First Friday of every month for free admission and extended hours! Explore the museum’s latest exhibitions and get in on the fun by attending a tour, workshop, performance, or activity throughout the day. Every First Friday is different, offering unique opportunities to engage with rotating exhibitions and the permanent collection.

12pm Upstander Intervention Training
In response to recent homophobic and transphobic incidents in the neighborhood and the city at large, Poster House is partnering with the New York City Anti-Violence Project to offer an upstander intervention training. Learn de-escalation strategies and how to safely intervene when witnessing or experiencing violence. All levels of experience are welcome to attend this comprehensive training.

3:00pm Black Power to Black People Curatorial Tour
Join curator Es-pranza Humphrey for a tour of Black Power to Black People: Branding the Black Panther Party. Learn how the Black Panther Party devised a graphic language to reaffirm Black humanity and decommodify Black life. Explore the bold language and striking graphics that exposed the public to radical images that captured a shift in tone in the fight for civil rights. Questions strongly encouraged!

3:30pm PH x Teens: Making the Message
Teens are invited to a special a back-to-back PH x Teens event!

In partnership with the Young Lordes Collective, PH x Teens invites you to a zine making workshop. The YLC will facilitate a discussion about the use of posters/pamphlets/other printable media in activism. After discussion, teens will make a zine about something that they are passionate about. Teens are encouraged to be as creative as they please. After they create their zines, teens are encouraged to explore Black Power to Black People: Branding the Black Panther Party.

PH x Teens is a drop-in program for young adults ages 13 to 18. Advanced registration is encouraged, but participants are not expected to stay the entire time; guests should plan to spend about an hour on this interactive, self-guided activity.

5:30pm PH x Teens: Watercolor Haiku
Teens are invited to a special a back-to-back PH x Teens event!

Inspired by Satō Kochi’s Five Seasons (1988), teens are invited to learn how to write a haiku using watercolor and calligraphy. Participants will take home a finished artwork, and are encouraged to explore the exhibition Made in Japan: 20th-Century Poster Art.

7pm PH X College: Student Movements & the Black Panther Party
Did you know that many members of the Black Panther Party were students? College students are invited to this special tour and talkback led by Poster House Educator Rayyan Mikati. Learn more about the Black Panther Party’s history of student organizing and students’ roles in the civil rights and Black Power movements. Questions strongly encouraged!
